Good thing they didn't have him use it in a sentence.
The usually tense atmosphere at the finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee was broken when Sameer Mishra, an 8th grader from West Lafayette, Indiana misheard (along with the entire giggling audience) the word numnah (a type of sheepskin pad) for the school yard taunt, numbnuts. Later, Sameer ended up having the last laugh, winning the entire competition by correctly spelling "guerdon" --"something that one has earned or gained." Which he did, indeed.
