'American Teen' Review

Does this documentary live up to the hype?

Most moms -- us included -- are simply too old to know what's really going on with teens. (And our teenagers would certainly never tell us.) So we sent our college intern to find out if this buzzed-about movie, opening this weekend, is the real deal.

Momlogic's Yasmin: Sitting in a dark movie theater is the last place I would expect to see high school relived, but that is exactly what happened when I went to see the American Teen: The Movie. It's a documentary following the senior class of an all-American high school. As I am preparing for my last year of college, there are certain things that I have a great deal of nostalgia for -- one of them being high school. It's funny how a few years can make you forget all the drama and misery.

Having all of these old high school moments wash over me gave me adequate reason to cringe; however, parents in the audience have even more reason to. If you are unsure what your high schooler is doing when you are not around, check this movie out -- it will give you all the dirty details: the underage drinking (that happens right under your own roof by the way), the late night sexcapades of your "innocent" teenager including "girl-on-girl action,"  and the incidents that prove your nice little son or daughter is really not so nice. Their reason? Your suffocating pressure on their lives.

The Tigers live in a little town in Warsaw, Indiana. Colin is the resident jock facing immense pressure from his parents and his community to be a superstar and get into college with his basketball skills. Megan is Ms. Popular and everyone's worst nightmare come to life, due to family pressure and the loss of a loved one. Poor Jake is the quintessential high school geek, with his overactive acne and monotone voice, who just can't seem to be anything but awkward. Finally, there is Hannah, who copes with a strange family situation and struggles to find herself in a small town.

For those of you who think that reality TV is scripted, American Teen: The Movie will make you question everything you have ever believed to be scripted reality. As a true diehard fan of the reality world, this movie is sure to be a hit with your teens -- and if you give it half a chance and allow yourself to be transported back to the good ol' days, you will love it, too. Just be sure to talk to your kids after!

Do not agree with moms are too old to know what’s going on with their children. There is really nothing new under the sun. You need to keep up.
