Britney's Smoking with the Kids

A disturbing yet not all that shocking Britney sighting.

A new photo has surfaced of mom Britney Spears lighting up in front of her son--he's even grabbing her smokes! What effect does this have on her kids?

We asked momlogic's resident pediatrician, Dr. Cara Natterson, for her perspective...

"When it comes to smoking in front of children, there are health effects to consider and then there are issues of role modeling. Secondhand smoke is known to increase a child's risk of asthma. This is no small deal--asthma can require regular use of breathing medications and, in some cases, it can be so severe that a child needs to go to the hospital.

But apart from the effects on the lungs, there are the effects on the brain. When a child watches an adult smoke, he learns that the behavior is acceptable. When preteens and teens watch their parents smoke, it is very difficult for those same parents to turn around and instruct their children not to do the same. Ideally, parents will be inspired by their children to stop smoking. But if they cannot quit, they should at least make every effort to do it out of the sight of their children."

What do you think of Britney smoking in front of the kids?

She’s not the first mother that smoked in front of her kid.

she is pure white trash. You can take the girl out of the trailer, but you can’t take the trailer out of the girl.

Many parents (myself included) smoke in front of their children. But like Britney is here, it is always outside and not right by them. I tell my children all the time how much I wish I had never started smoking because it is such a horrible habit to have. I hope by having them see the struggles I go through trying to quit, they will never have the desire to start and put themselves in that position. People need to quit worrying about Britney and her boys. No one else gets photographed for stuff like this and put in the magazines to be talked about. If she had them on her lap in the hotel room, it would be a bigger deal; but she’s not, so give the poor girl a break. People who want to focus on her need to focus on the positive changes she’s made instead of continuing to stress every little thing they feel she’s doing wrong.

My mother smoked around me regularly. She even did it after her beloved grandmother died of lung cancer. My mother still does it even with emphysema and on inhalers! My aunt stopped smoking around her children yet what is funny here is her daughter smokes and all I did was experiment. I do not have the urge or notion to smoke what so ever. People can feed me bs like smoking around your kids will make them smoke. Only if they are weak minded. My mom didn’t tell me one way or another about smoking. I made up my own mind after smoking for nearly a year when I was 12. It just didn’t interest me. Smoking more about peer pressure and seeing it as an outlet for your problems. It’s a stress addiction. People don’t realize it at all. I don’t condone smoking around your children but all the smokers I know, with the exception of my mother, smoke outside. I honestly feel bad for Brittney regardless she is still at fault for her own actions. She is trying but I do believe she suffered from post-partum depression and that fink of a ex she had didn’t help her at all. Her break up with Justin and then her subsequent marriage to that jackass brought her down. She knows it too. Unfortunately she didn’t have the tools to cope or know how to fix it herself. People say her family could help or friend could of but look at her situation?! Would you trust anyone? Nope. She needs to take responsibility for herself which it appears she is trying but she cannot kick EVERYTHING over night. No one should expect that. At all. Even DSS and social workers give people allotted time. Celebs are not more special or different then us. I’m sorry. Just normal people with extraordinary circumstances to their career choices. I wouldn’t be so hard on her now. It doesn’t help anyone being so negative. If anything she needs more positive role models around her, people that get be on her level.

My dad and my aunt smoked in front of me. My mom did not smoke, and wanted both of them to quit. She didn’t want me smoking either, and I avoided smoking in front of her so she wouldn’t feel guilty. Of course, instead of smoking, Mom ate, and struggled with her weight, which eventually was a factor in the condition that lead to her death at 68. My dad and my aunt are both alive and well and in their ‘70’s. My aunt still smokes, but Dad quit once he realized it wasn’t going to prevent him from getting old. I avoid smoking in front of my kids, but I don’t see how smoking became the be-all and end-all of unhealthy habits. We’re all going to die, it’s just a matter of when and how. I’m more concerned with my kids eating right and being active, since childhood obesity is a much more immediate health threat than an occasional whiff of secondhand smoke. 2

So it’s not ok for Britney to light up in front of her kids, but it is OK for our a possible future president to smoke in front of his kids. Which i’m sure has happened once or twice since their dad Barak Obama is a life long smoker. Well???

I think we need to all get off Britney’s case. I’m not going to go all Chris Crocker on everyone but I’m sure that if she would just be left alone without us judging her, she could pull herself together. Besides that you all act like you’ve never seen someone smoke in front of their children. There are people in society today who smoke inside the house and around their children but it doesn’t make them trashy. I’m tired of seeing Britney too but everytime we post nasty comments of her on sites like this we’re giving the tabloids exactly what they want. So newsflash, if you want to quit seeing Britney, quit posting mean stuff about her and accept the fact she is the way she is or the tabloids will just keep writing about her.

Come on! Unfortunate as it may be, there are LOTS of folks who light up in front of their kids. Brittany is messed up, to be sure, but this is not a huge thing, folks. It’s all relative.

Okay, we get it. Smoking in front of our children isn’t a good idea. My mom smoked when my sister and I were growing up, and she even smoked when she was pregnant with us. And both of us ended up becoming smokers. But it was more a peer pressure thing for me. Growing up I hated my mom’s smoking and vowed I would never start. I now wish that I hadn’t had that first one and have been trying very hard lately to quit, without success yet. I’m not a big fan of Britney, but this isn’t the worst thing in the world she could be doing. I have two children, 6 and 4 years old, and I never smoke in front of them or in the house. But I AM a good mother and love them very much—and I never want them to smoke. Just remember that none of us are perfect. Lori

Um, ok; for one she’s taking the cigarettes away from him before he tries to eat them or something, and secondly; notice the bikini, large door behind brittney and tiled floor below…obviously she’s at the pool…an open area where the smoke will be a lot less likely to cause any harm to her child…and yeah, this website’s articles are terrible…our husband’s are cheating…cheating is good for a marriage…size 12 is fat…TERRIBLE!
