Is the book based on the popular Web site funny or offensive?

white_people_270.jpg

StuffWhitePeopleLike.com is a list of, well, stuff white people like. Is this satire an example of acceptable stereotyping or is it heading into dangerous territory? Some examples that made the cut of what white people actually like:

Asian fusion foods

Being offended

Threatening to move to Canada

Religions their parents don't belong to

80s night

Expensive sandwiches

Apple products

The book was released on July 1 and was estimated to have sold 10,000 copies in its first two weeks.

SO funny, and SO TRUE! I’m glad we can finally poke fun at ourselves!

Just another example of racism in America gone mainstream. I find it offensive and wrong.

It could be called, “What rich people with privilige and time on their hands like”. I have seen the website, and as a woman who grew up white and priviliged, I know tons of people like this. I also know that not all white people fit this type of mold. Put out a book about what any other group “likes” and base it on stereotypes based on the begavior of a small percentage of that population, and see what people say. All racism is bad.

I think it’s funny. I’m white, and can laugh at the stereotypes. But how will people react when there’s a book called “Stuff Black People Like” comes out? I wonder if the NAACP would be able to laugh at the stereotypes given to black people?

April, It depends on whether or not a Black person puts it out. Black people have made plenty of Black movies, songs and TV shows that make fun of Black stereotypes and they are seen as clever, funny & smart and like this book all races can have a laugh.

April, there is a website called “stuff educated black people like”. As well as stuff christians like, stuff asians like, stuff africans hate…and Hundreds more! For the most part they are specific to a cultural audience, ironic, and irreverent. Some may find this type of humor offensive while others find it hilarious.

APRIL: Black people can most definitely laugh at ourselves, but most of the stereotypes White people have about us are very degrading and NOT funny. TAKE A LOOK AT THE LIST ABOVE about “what white people like”: “80s Night…Apple Products…expensive sandwiches…?” All of those things are harmless…that’s why most people can laugh at them. I’ve never heard/seen a White person poking fun at Black people do the same thing. Most of the time, it never goes well… WHY? Because they’re not coming from an innocently kidding place…they’re coming from a place steeped in racism whether they want to admit it or not. CASE IN POINT: MICHAEL RICHARDS (and others like him.) Personally, I think if society can try to remember what stereotypes ARE & in reality, take people based on their individuality, we could advance much faster…as the HUMAN race…and laugh at ourselves.

It doesn’t go well because Black people are a minority. It’s really on acceptable to make fun of the people who are in the best position - in this day and age that is White people.

what i learned is that there is alot white people who are as poor as it gets and there are black people who are rich as it gets u can’t assume that all white people are rich not true there are more white people that are poor than anyone else look at Maine its all white and everyone who lives there is really poor
