Warning: TV Can Be Deadly

filed under: toddler

A toddler is tragically crushed to death by a television set.

Two-year-old Blessing Carter died after she was crushed by a television set on Saturday. Blessing had just finished taking a bath and wandered to a dresser to get some clothes when the 27-inch television set atop the dresser fell on top of her, according to family members. They hope that other parents will learn from their tragedy.

Heavy television sets placed upon dressers or entertainment centers can be deadly for tots if they topple over. The Consumer Product Safety Commission received reports of 36 TV tip-over-related deaths and 65 furniture tip-over deaths from 2000 to 2005. More than 80% of all these deaths involved young children.

Safety experts recommend anchoring all entertainment units, TV stands, bookcases, shelving and bureaus to the wall using appropriate hardware, such as brackets, screws, or toggles. The Anti-Tip Furniture Strap 2-Pack is $3.95, and can be ordered here. Then, anchor the TV to the dresser with these Safety Straps, which run $14.95. Our thoughts go out to Blessing's family. Have you child-proofed your television?
