Do You Really Know Your Husband?

What the Clark Rockefeller case can teach all moms.

The case of Clark Rockefeller, the man who kidnapped his 7-year-old daughter Reigh and was later arrested, has captivated the nation. It seems no one, not even his former wife, knew his true identity--and he may actually be a murderer. Today, the FBI positively identified him as Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter.

After Reigh's abduction, a spokesman for the John D. Rockefeller family said that Clark Rockefeller is not a descendant of the wealthy industrialist family of New York. Police now say Rockefeller used a range of aliases, including J.P. Clark Rockefeller, James Frederick, Clark Mill Rockefeller and Michael Brown.

Unconfirmed reports have suggested that Mr. Rockefeller's fingerprints have been linked to a driver's license application filed under a name that appears on a wanted list for the apparent homicide of a young newlywed man, and possibly his wife--a crime committed some 23 years ago.

Kevin Connell, founder and CEO of Accu-Screen, Inc., a background screening agency, and author of Background Checks for the Job: What Every Job Applicant, Employee and Employer Needs to Know About Them Right Now, says cases like this serve as wake-up calls to women about the importance of background checks. "Doing a background check and criminal search on someone you are involved with is crucial, especially in today's society," he explains. "There are so many con men out there who target females with money and power in particular. These cunning criminals often have above-average intelligence, and they can trick even the smartest women." For instance, Clark's ex-wife Sandra went to Harvard, but she was still hoodwinked by the man who calls himself Clark Rockefeller. "These psychopaths have lied so long, they believe their own lies," Connell explains. "They have practiced lying as an art form."

This is just too creepy. This guy is scary. I cannot imagine if you found out you did not even know the father of your children. It gives me the chills.

I just found out my husband is also a fraud. In our 6 year relationship he’s never been faithful…even had 3 others going on when I found out. He was promising at least 3 of the women that he was going to marry them and live happily ever after. This is the type of guy you see on Oprah because he had multiples wives/families across the county. He started one relationship while my son was in the NICU fighting for his life after being born 3+ months prematurely. He even relocated us for “work” cross country to be with one of his paramours. He was with another while we were trying to get pregnant. I hired a computer guy to scrub my PC. We found 600+ porn files, pictures, etc. Never mind all the URLs he was surfing, including teenager sites. He’s been called a pathological liar, narcissist, sociopath, sex addict, etc. How do I deal with this man for the rest of my life since we have a 2 year old son whose life is forever changed? I even have to share custody! What a terrible role model for my son. Oh ya…never did even get the decency of an apology. Not that it would matter, it would just be another lie!

Playing the world-weary aristocrat, Christian Gerhartsreiter (let’s not dignify his pretense of being a Rockefeller) was fond of impressing others by saying: “I’ve had just about enough confit de canard.” How could his wife, a Stanford graduate, not see through a phony routine like that?
