'Dress' Gets Girl Booted

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

First, it was the case of a criminal prom dress. Now, a young woman is tossed from the mall for wearing a short dress. Funny thing is, she bought the little number at that very mall hours before, and the dress in question was actually a shirt. See the fashion crime and tell us--is she cute or should she get the boot?

Every year, girls' dresses seem to be getting shorter and shorter (as we get older and older). But when they're wearing shirts as dresses...hmmm. Kymberly Clem, 20, was thrown out of a Kentucky mall Saturday because the "dress" she was wearing was deemed too short by security guards. (Who knew they had such power?)

"The article of clothing that she is trying to pull off as a dress is actually a top--it was purchased at one of our retail stores," says Vickey Strunk, Richmond Mall manager. "We have a dress code here...if you are coming here to shop today, and you come in wearing a top with no pants, then we are going to ask you to leave."

Clem tells a different story: "I was walking through and 10 minutes after I was there, the security guard approached me, asked me to step aside, made me completely do a turn around while he stared me up and down and then asked me to leave because my outfit was too provocative and people's husbands was [sic] looking at me."

Men weren't the only ones staring.  One mother with small children complained because she says Klem's dress was so short you could see her thong.

The tank shirt, called a club shirt, was purchased at a Deb clothing stores in the mall. "We've seen this a million times," says a rep from Deb Stores. "Girls are always buying shirts as dresses--it depends really on your height, whether you can pull it off."

Because of the incident, the Richmond mall says they might have to update their dress code. "On our doors we clearly have posted 'no shoes, no shirt, no service,'" jokes Strunk. "Well, I guess I'm going to have to add 'no pants' to that."

Do you think the trashy looks sold in stores should be banned from malls?

What's up with wearing a shirt as a dress?! It's just one of the many fashion trends we wish would go away. Check out our photo gallery:

I wore shorter dresses than that in the early 70’s - to work and everywhere else and so did a majority of all the other 18 to 22 yr. olds. I’m not saying I like it now, but please, if she’s so indecently dressed, call the cops and have her arrested for indecent exposure. Far worse than this look is all of the “boys” running around with their pants around their knees - Not only does it look bad, but how in the world can they walk? They all look ridiculous and uncomfortable. The tacky thong underwear exposed when girls sit or bend over is a close 2nd. Unless I missed some more revealing pictures, her dress wasn’t as offensive as either one of the aforementioned “popular” trends - to me anyway!

Why penalize a store because a customer wears something inapropriately. She bought a shirt, why should the store be responsible for what she is going to do with it. If she has her thong showing, she was “letting it all hang out”. Yes, send her home to dress appropriately.

They clearly state in the article that you could see her thong, that’s indecent exposure so she needs to be glad they just tossed her out instead of tossing her in jail! Why do women feel the need to dress like this? Don’t they have ANY self esteem at all? Even when I was built like that, I never wore anything that revealing, my body is special, partly because not everyone has access to it! When something is common and free for all, it loses it’s value!

It is a shame people can’t wear what they like. Unfortunately we live in a world with way to many pervs. I would be worried that she would get attacked.

If you want to show your gstring or a*s go to the strip joint there is no reason to expose young children at the mall to this slutty behaviour, girls now adays have no respect for themselves they are all growing up like sluts

Goes to show how kids have no standards or morals. Anything goes. I do not want to see someones freaking underwear in public. Those who do that have some sort of mental problem about exposing themselves in public. And also they have parents who could care less also. Sickening.

no need to put a ban on her but put her on a warning list. If she does it again then ban her for disrespecting dress code and sweetheart its no shirt no shoes no pants no service…that’s the theoretics of it. she should’ve put on some leggings or something instead. so that way no one could say anything. but its also for your protection b/c you don’t want the wrong type of people looking at you…like ex: Rapists!!! known fact that rapists look for victims with less articles of clothing…(easy access) so think twice before wearing something that could cost you your life.

Kym also needs to remember that not because “people’s husband” are looking at her it is not necessarily in admiration…don’t we all stare at clowns and monkeys when we see them?

What’s wrong with dressing appropriately for where you are? Example:Bathing suit on a beach. See? No problem with that. But a bathing suit at a mall wouldnt be appropriate. Underwear isnt supposed to be seen..hence its name. I dont want to see the top of anyones underwear and I certainly dont want to see the bottom of it either! The store that sold that item of clothing sold it as a shirt. NOT as a dress. The reason she got in trouble was other mall customers(who has just as much right to be there as the shirt wearer, complained. If the girl needs that kind of attention maybe she just needs to find a street corner in a busy section of town.

Do we not have enough to worry about. The security guards were mad because she would not give them the time of day. It is alright if a huge person wears spandex? It is ok for these boys/men to walk around with their pants to the floor . I don’t think so .. leave the girl alone…

i think it is funny that you people think it is ok to kick someone out of the mall for their clthes, but you threw a mager fit about the airline incident. if a business has the right to have you removed and refuse to do business with you then so should the airline industry. i’m tired of hearing all the different standards

What’s in question is if you could really see her thong, which in this day and age would really have been the only reason anyone would have complained. Because as everyone has stated we’ve all seen people dressed worse walk about without incedent. If her thong was visible that means probably when she walked her shirt rode up exposing her butt. I’ve shopped in Deb where she bought this shirt and its a very inexpensive store that sells a lot of stretchy synthetic fabrics which a perfect for that “rides up ur thighs effect” many people these days are looking for in club cloths. I don’t know about anyone else, but exposing your naked buttocks in a mall (which p.s is not a public place in the legal sense of the term) is disgusting and very rude no matter what shape you are in. I’ve got a great one, but fully realize my naked bottom shouldn’t be seen outside of a dressing room in a mall.

Well, I agree the dress seems short, but did anyone watch the Brady Bunch??? Their dresses were that short or shorter!! The styles come and go. Also, the picture of the dress looks shorter than the dress actually does in the video, did anyone notice that??

you people keep calling this shirt a dress. its a freaking shirt not a dress. and her underwear were showing! and it was a thong! thats sad it also means her nasty butt was showing. now what if a someone walked in the mall in a little cotton tshirt and underwear? it would be trashy right??? well so is this. and what kind of image does it send to young girls? i find it offensive and i think the SHIRT is hideous. i have a son and having a baby girl in 3 weeks. if i was walking through the mall with my family and saw something like this i would strongly voice my opinion. if you wanna dress like that then find a man and a bedroom. or go to the strip club and do your job. mainly people should not be allowed to dress this way in the presence of children
