'Dress' Gets Girl Booted

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

First, it was the case of a criminal prom dress. Now, a young woman is tossed from the mall for wearing a short dress. Funny thing is, she bought the little number at that very mall hours before, and the dress in question was actually a shirt. See the fashion crime and tell us--is she cute or should she get the boot?

Every year, girls' dresses seem to be getting shorter and shorter (as we get older and older). But when they're wearing shirts as dresses...hmmm. Kymberly Clem, 20, was thrown out of a Kentucky mall Saturday because the "dress" she was wearing was deemed too short by security guards. (Who knew they had such power?)

"The article of clothing that she is trying to pull off as a dress is actually a top--it was purchased at one of our retail stores," says Vickey Strunk, Richmond Mall manager. "We have a dress code here...if you are coming here to shop today, and you come in wearing a top with no pants, then we are going to ask you to leave."

Clem tells a different story: "I was walking through and 10 minutes after I was there, the security guard approached me, asked me to step aside, made me completely do a turn around while he stared me up and down and then asked me to leave because my outfit was too provocative and people's husbands was [sic] looking at me."

Men weren't the only ones staring.  One mother with small children complained because she says Klem's dress was so short you could see her thong.

The tank shirt, called a club shirt, was purchased at a Deb clothing stores in the mall. "We've seen this a million times," says a rep from Deb Stores. "Girls are always buying shirts as dresses--it depends really on your height, whether you can pull it off."

Because of the incident, the Richmond mall says they might have to update their dress code. "On our doors we clearly have posted 'no shoes, no shirt, no service,'" jokes Strunk. "Well, I guess I'm going to have to add 'no pants' to that."

Do you think the trashy looks sold in stores should be banned from malls?

What's up with wearing a shirt as a dress?! It's just one of the many fashion trends we wish would go away. Check out our photo gallery:

If the dress code is not publicly posted then they had no right to kick her out. She was not violating any laws and there are people every day that are whearing more revealing clothes than that. As for who was complaining… LOOK AWAY!

Boy… what’s wrong with the people in Kentucky??? This is 2008 not 1908. There are more important things in this world to be worried about. The girls fine.

When are they going to ban spandex on obese people. Because I find that much more offensive than seeing someone’s underwear.

Personally, I wasn’t offended by the dress beyond the fact it’s an ugly dress. She didn’t look sexy in it so I’m surprised men were actually looking at her. She’s not even pretty. Still, I agree the mall has the right to decide what is acceptable clothing and what isn’t for people shopping there. She should save the hoochie dressing for the club or home.

If a mall security guard asked me to leave from wearing this dress (which I can’t see anything wrong with it)I would sue the owners of the mall, the security company and the City for discrimination and embarressing me. Heck, the Victorias Secret store’s show more X-Rated clothing in thier windows! Also, since when are their Style Police in the malls? I thought the Style Police were only on the back pages of all of my wifes magazines she gets.

As someone suggested, the “uproar” about this girl’s outfit was not because the women’s parts wereb’t “hitting the right spots”.. lol. When I was younger, I wore more revealing clothing, but I always made sure my bra wasn’t hanging out, my underwear wasn’t showing, and any naughty bits were covered just as well. It’s all about maturity and having SOME form of decency (to not let yourself “hang out” in a public, family oriented place. Just because women do not want some girl flashing her ***** or *** in front of their kids and themselves while trying to SHOP, does not mean they are jealous at all. If people wanted a show, they would go somewhere else besides a mall, where families not only frequent, but are catored to. If the girl wanted to wear something short, she should have done the “arm raise” test first.. ick.. lol

You all need to get lifes. Who cares how she wears her dress. If none of her private parts are showing; who cares. Don’t go in public places if you are so easily offended.

The pic doesn’t look bad, but if you could truly see her thong, then it’s out of line. What is wrong with women today? I’m all for being attractive, but does that mean you can’t be attractive and have some CLASS. Some girls look like they came straight off the pole.

Bottom line people, your so called freedom of expression, ends at my store intrance!!! Does anyone really believe that the picture you are looking at, really depicts how short she was wearing it that day? daaaaaaa! Look, if you want to dress like a tramp, thats your right but as a store owner I have the right to have you esscorted out of my store. Look, my store also sells mens underware and if you wear baggy pants that expose those underware, you will be asked to leave my store. If I lose business over that, then so be it!

The dress is cute, yes it sucks that she was kicked out of the mall, but her underwear was visible and frankly at 20 she should have been aware of that.

They did not hav ehte right to ask her to leave. She was dressed like someone her age and I have worn shirts as dresses before, tastefully as she did here. I am sure you couldn’t see anything unless you tried to, which is probably the problem. Once again, the pretty, in shape girl gets tossed from somewhere because some overweight soccer Mom can’t keep her husband in check. This is America (you know, land of the FREE?) the last time I checked and rent a cops have more to worry about than what a girl has on…like shoplifters! Meanwhile, half the male population walks around with their pants STARTING where their bums end with UNDERWEAR VISABLY SHOWING and no one says a thing.

Yes she should be sent out of the mall. I hope all America will begin banning clearly offensive clothing such as men’s pants drifting below their butts and women with “shirt” only displaying their bare bottoms! Sheesh!

This is rather ridiculous, I mean seriously who the hell are security guards to be fashion police? It’s so annoying when everybody else determines what others can and can’t do, in every little faucet of their lives, and people who really have no right to. She is 20 years old, she is old enough to make her own decisions, if she wants to wear a low cut dress, let her, who is some rent-a-cop to tell her she can’t? For one it really isn’t that important, but as others have said, what ever happened to freedom? Apparently we’ll squall about freedom all day, but when it comes to people actually being free, we hide in shame of some sort. Honestly, what’s the difference, people parade around in bikinis but, because those aren’t deemed, … underwear… they’re totally acceptable in public places… Lighten up, she’s a cute girl, wearing a dress, or shirt, or whatever… I could understand if she wasn’t wearing underwear etc. and it became a case of indecent exposure. Which, I’m from Ohio, and believe it or not, it’s not illegal for women to be topless in public. And, I think, if she is good looking, who cares… It’s all these really obese people who wear belly shirts, or short shorts, or tank tops that will scar kids for life, not a cute girl wearing a low cut dress.

You need to shave when you wear a dress that short. And I don’t mean your legs…

Are you kidding me?!? She should not have been turned away! That dress is not “provocative” in the least! Just because some woman’s husband glanced at the hot 20 year old walking by doesn’t give the mall security the right to throw her out! That lady needs to deal with her home issues at home, not at the mall by accusing innocent young women. As far as the underwear showing issue goes… lots of people show their underwear. Look at young men’s fashions today with the sagging pants look. What is the big deal about underwear? You’d see the same thing at the beach. You see the same thing in magazine ads and store displays. It’s not like she was showing her naked body! Get over yourselves people… Our “president” has driven this country into the ground, killed countless young people, destroyed the economy, lied and cheated us all and you’r worried about outdated puritan hang ups like dress codes!
