'Dress' Gets Girl Booted

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

First, it was the case of a criminal prom dress. Now, a young woman is tossed from the mall for wearing a short dress. Funny thing is, she bought the little number at that very mall hours before, and the dress in question was actually a shirt. See the fashion crime and tell us--is she cute or should she get the boot?

Every year, girls' dresses seem to be getting shorter and shorter (as we get older and older). But when they're wearing shirts as dresses...hmmm. Kymberly Clem, 20, was thrown out of a Kentucky mall Saturday because the "dress" she was wearing was deemed too short by security guards. (Who knew they had such power?)

"The article of clothing that she is trying to pull off as a dress is actually a top--it was purchased at one of our retail stores," says Vickey Strunk, Richmond Mall manager. "We have a dress code here...if you are coming here to shop today, and you come in wearing a top with no pants, then we are going to ask you to leave."

Clem tells a different story: "I was walking through and 10 minutes after I was there, the security guard approached me, asked me to step aside, made me completely do a turn around while he stared me up and down and then asked me to leave because my outfit was too provocative and people's husbands was [sic] looking at me."

Men weren't the only ones staring.  One mother with small children complained because she says Klem's dress was so short you could see her thong.

The tank shirt, called a club shirt, was purchased at a Deb clothing stores in the mall. "We've seen this a million times," says a rep from Deb Stores. "Girls are always buying shirts as dresses--it depends really on your height, whether you can pull it off."

Because of the incident, the Richmond mall says they might have to update their dress code. "On our doors we clearly have posted 'no shoes, no shirt, no service,'" jokes Strunk. "Well, I guess I'm going to have to add 'no pants' to that."

Do you think the trashy looks sold in stores should be banned from malls?

What's up with wearing a shirt as a dress?! It's just one of the many fashion trends we wish would go away. Check out our photo gallery:

that dress was totally fine. I’ve seen people wear stuff like that to my church. She should sue. And if people’s husbands are looking at her then that’s their problem. what about girls that wear cut off shorts with their booty hangin out the bottom? hello, there are worse things out there, and no doubt that they sell worse things than that at that mall, if I were her I would sue, sue, sue. That is total discrimination.

Although freedom of expression is a right we all have, “expressions” such as these not only offend people around her but also demean her. People say that respect is the most important thing, so how is she achieving that looking like a prostitute? It’s like the halloween costumes in “Mean Girls”!

How pathetic, how silly. Dress codes? Really? Grow up! Why should someone have to concern themselves with other people’s jealous hang ups? I find fat and ugly people far more offensive and I’m not suggesting that anyone turn them away. What a joke!

I think she looked pretty good in it. I don’t know about seeing her underwear like one of the posts stated, and if that had been the case, then maybe she could of been made to leave. The girl had a nice body and wore the shirt (dress) to show it off. However if she is going up the elevator or stairs, then she has no right to complain about guys wanting to take a long look either.

Give me a break. I hope she sues ‘the pants’ off them and wins. They clearly did not have a sign that stated ‘no pants’ no sale, nor did they have a sign that stated how short a skirt/dress can be. I cannot believe the store actually called that a shirt - it’s way too long for a shirt. The way the U.S. is going, we might as well have Sudam running it.

See, it’s skanks like these that creat a NEED for a dress code at places like THE MALL and ON AIRPLANES. Just becasue a chick has no morals, doesn’t mean everyone needs to be subject to their whoreness… Please - enough with the underwear already - that’s why it’s called UNDERwear! HOw can anyone expect us to teach our littel girls what is proper and what is not if SOMEONE doesn’t put the brakes on hookerwear!

What’s wrong with the dress - just a typical summer dress - I am a conservative dresser and hate the way the Hollywood Pop Tarts dress, but there was nothing at obscene about this dress…I’ve seen worse in offices!!! These security guards are getting out of hand….bunch of prissy control freaks…

April, you could not see her underwear. That dress was actually very nice. It was a sun dress in she was in the south, obviously pretty nice weather. Don’t be jealous.

I’m surprised no one has noticed the dress in the interview has the hem lenghtened (piece added). The still photo shows a much shorter hem which I assume is the offending garment.

Maybe if malls and all public places for that matter everywhere started doing this we could gain a bit of decorum and decency back. I have a terrific body and I would never wear that trashy stuff.I also have a BIG problem with that dumbass rapper baggy pants look. That’s another thing that needs to be dealt with.

So let me get this right, it is ok for mothers to nurse their babys in public, with their saggy boob hanging out. But it is not ok for a young girl with fully covered body parts to go to the mall. Something is seriously wrong with this picture. But of course jealousy from the staring husbands wifes has nothing to do with it. What a joke.

She is a real winner! I bet her parents are proud! She is a real class act! Too bad she can’t buy some “class” at the mall. Lovely…

For the people saying you can see underwear I have to ask what are you looking at? No underwear was visible at all. I bet half the people complaining are just fat women who would look horrible in that outfit so they feel nobody should be able to wear it. I guess if people like you ran soceity we would all be wearing long sleevs shirts, long pants and coats at all times.

Who cares! Why should there be a dress code in public? it’s not school, or work! She should be able to wear what ever she wants. it’s America! go girl, where that shirt as a dress!!

this is dumb no way should she be kicked out becuse of what she was wearing, it covers enough, and it does clearly state “no shirt no shoes no service” so where was the problem just because wife’s husbands were lokking at her doesn’t give just cause to boot her out of the mall, maybe the wife’s should work on there marriages or better yet teach the guys some manners not to stare, i don’t agree w/ her being kicked out or the other girl who was booted from the prom

Do the security guards also toss out our african american youth whose pants are worn around their hips and who show underwear openly? Or is that racist?

I am so tired of looking at boxers and underwear on the “dudes” who think it looks cool to wear thier pants below their butt. And the girls who wear dresses that dont cover up - well that’s a huge turn off too. Remember - clothing was intended to cover up our bodies because it’s not acceptable to go around nude in public places, here in America. You want to go around half dressed - stay in your own back yard/house.
