'Dress' Gets Girl Booted

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

First, it was the case of a criminal prom dress. Now, a young woman is tossed from the mall for wearing a short dress. Funny thing is, she bought the little number at that very mall hours before, and the dress in question was actually a shirt. See the fashion crime and tell us--is she cute or should she get the boot?

Every year, girls' dresses seem to be getting shorter and shorter (as we get older and older). But when they're wearing shirts as dresses...hmmm. Kymberly Clem, 20, was thrown out of a Kentucky mall Saturday because the "dress" she was wearing was deemed too short by security guards. (Who knew they had such power?)

"The article of clothing that she is trying to pull off as a dress is actually a top--it was purchased at one of our retail stores," says Vickey Strunk, Richmond Mall manager. "We have a dress code here...if you are coming here to shop today, and you come in wearing a top with no pants, then we are going to ask you to leave."

Clem tells a different story: "I was walking through and 10 minutes after I was there, the security guard approached me, asked me to step aside, made me completely do a turn around while he stared me up and down and then asked me to leave because my outfit was too provocative and people's husbands was [sic] looking at me."

Men weren't the only ones staring.  One mother with small children complained because she says Klem's dress was so short you could see her thong.

The tank shirt, called a club shirt, was purchased at a Deb clothing stores in the mall. "We've seen this a million times," says a rep from Deb Stores. "Girls are always buying shirts as dresses--it depends really on your height, whether you can pull it off."

Because of the incident, the Richmond mall says they might have to update their dress code. "On our doors we clearly have posted 'no shoes, no shirt, no service,'" jokes Strunk. "Well, I guess I'm going to have to add 'no pants' to that."

Do you think the trashy looks sold in stores should be banned from malls?

What's up with wearing a shirt as a dress?! It's just one of the many fashion trends we wish would go away. Check out our photo gallery:

Is the mall willing and able to make everyone wearing short skirts, dresses and shorts leave? What about these young woman wearing the little strapless shirts without bras? Is that any less offensive? Also if you dont want people wearing the clothes in the mall then don’t sell them in the mall. I understand that it was a shirt but they do sale skirts that are shorter than that dress/shirt. POST DRESS CODE PUBLICLY!! Don’t assume everyone is modest and responsible.

She should have been asked to leave for committing heinous crimes against fashion, not for the length of her dress, which was more appropriate for a club, not the mall.

well, I don’t think it is that bad!! Yet, we are allowing foreign women to fully clothe their faces to get a photo license, that I think is worse!!

Why don’t we just go for a dress code like they have in Saudi Arabia. Would that make those “husbands” happier?

I didn’t see any underwear showing! Then, and ONLY then should it have been a problem. And to those women who make yourselves feel better by calling someone you don’t know a whore, well, I’ve got some advice for you. Put down the remote control and the bag of oreos and loose some weight. Then maybe you could wear something a little form fitting (which THIS girls dress/shirt was NOT) and quit saying nasty things about people out of jealousy! Just a thought.

I think the dress is fine. If the malls are going to throw young girls out for showing to much. They should also throw out the boys who wear the pants down around their knee’s with their under ware showing.

Walking the fence on this. Not too small to me, but the mall has the right for a dress code, but they shouldn’t sell any outer wear they don’t allow worn there…

THERE ARE TIMES & PLACES FOR CERTAIN DRESS CODES. THIS IS A MALL NOT A DANCE CLUB. BUT THIS IS AMERICA! SO UNLESS THE MALL POSTS A SPECIFIC DRESS CODE & KEEPS IT STRICT SO AS NOT TO PICK & CHOOSE IT’S COMPLAINTS THEN NOTHING CAN BE DONE. AS LONG AS SHE WASN’T BEING INDECENT SUCH AS SEEING HER UNDERGARMENTS THEN SHE SHOULD BE LEFT ALONE. IF SHE WAS DECENT THEN THERE SHOULDN’T BE A PROBLEM WHETHER IT IS A SHIRT OR A DRESS. YES, FLASHING IS ILLEGAL WHETHER INTENTIONAL OR UNINTENTIONAL. SO LADIES USE A 3-WAY-MIRROR WHEN YOU SHOP.

All she needed to do was wear the garment as it was supposed to be worn. Anyone with common sense knows that a shirt is to be worn with, oh let’s see, pants, or a skirt, or some shorts. You don’t just walk out in public showing your private business. It’s called “privates” for a reason. A lot of girls today are dressing more like streetwalkers and I think it’s time for people to let them know it’s not okay.

I don’t see anything wrong with this dress/shirt. As long as she has decent panties underneath. I have seen full butt cheeks hanging out of shorts or skirts with a bit of crotch showing and this is just in Walmart. She looks fine. If they are going to sell it, they had better be able allow it in their stores.

april claims here that the dress does look trashy ,especially since you could see her underwear. unless you have x ray eyes, there is simply no way in hell to see this girls underwear. as a matter of fact, the dress in question is not even as short as dresses worn in the 70’s. that dress, if you look closely, comes about half way between her butt and her knees. very appropriate attire for shopping if you ask me.

Has anyone other than me noticed that the dress in the video is longer than the dress in the picture? Looks to me that she may have switched dresses for her interview. hmmmmm.

If you buy a thong from the mall, would that be your argument for wearing it out for everyone to see? Every mall sales a lot of articles of clothing that aren’t meant to be worn in public. If a person is dressed inappropiately for his or her surroundings they should be prepared to be asked to leave and not act so dumbfounded.

her dress might be short, but if you could see her thong, god damn why do we allow guys to wear pants where you can see their boxers? kick guys out of the mall if you can see their underwear and maybe girls will start covering up a bit too…
