Does Hillary Really Want Obama?

The former presidential candidate stands behind Barack Obama.

Last night, Hillary Clinton threw her support behind her rival in a speech that said everything she was supposed to say--and little more than that.

The Democratic National Convention floor did not deteriorate into pandemonium. No blood was drawn. There was no hair pulling or ballot flinging among the rival delegates. But the bitter feuding between Hillary and Barack Obama is far from over.

In a speech that critics dubbed one of her finest, Hillary didn't miss the opportunity to remind everyone of how much she accomplished. "My supporters, my champions--my sisterhood of the traveling pantsuits--from the bottom of my heart: Thank you," she said. "You never gave in. You never gave up. And together we made history." She made sure to tell them to vote for "my candidate Barack Obama."

But behind the scenes, the gloves were still off. People close to Hillary say she's been depressed since she lost in June and has been looking to the convention as something of a "catharsis."

But if catharsis involves snarkiness, she's been on target. Hillary refused to show Obama's camp a copy of her speech ahead of time, and got pointers from campaign guru Mark Penn, who the Obamas openly despise. During a speech she gave at a private event in Denver on Tuesday, she failed to mention Obama's name even once to the group of mainly women. "She was sensitive to her supporters," Toni Leigh, a Clinton supporter who attended the event, told The Hill. "We are hurting right now; we are in pain. We do not know Obama."

Hillary did give a shout out to Michelle Obama, who had thrown a punch or two at her during the primaries. But Michelle handed Hillary an olive branch during her own speech on Monday night when she praised her for the "18 million cracks in the glass ceiling."

Now that Hillary has passed the torch with as much grace as she could muster, it'll remain to be seen whether she rallies her forces to get behind the nominee or decides to hole up until 2012.
