Disastrous Baby Names

Have hurricanes taken all the good names-- that depends, do you like the name Bertha?

Before tropical storms were given names in 1953, they were identified by longitude and latitude--which didn't cause much problem for expectant moms--who wants to name their kid 34° 8' 15.6696? People found the coordinate method a bit confusing, so women's names were used--which might be considered misogynistic or empowering, depending on how you look at it. Men's names weren't used until 1979--probably about the time women were joining the workforce at the National Hurricane Center.
Names on the lists don't stay there forever. When storms cause too much destruction the names are retired. Katrina, has been dropped from the list - along with Floyd and Iris--hey you can have 'em. There are some really great names on the list too, such as, Ana Claudette, Colin, Henri, Fiona, Odette and Oscar. But be warned, if you plan to use them as baby names--they may not hold up after being linked to destroying a few thousand homes.
The name Katrina dropped more than 100 slots on the popularity list after the disater. Ironically, the name increased in popularity in the states where the storm caused the most damage. Some feel Katrina is now synonymous with fortitude and strength. Let's hope, nine months from now, there aren't a bunch of new babies named Fay.
