Britney's costly divorce: Legal bills submitted on behalf of two law firms who represented Britney Spears total more than $466,000. That's not including the $250,000 she has agreed to pay Kevin Federline's attorneys. The biggest bill is nearly $407,000 for four months of work and another totaled $60,000 for two months worth of work. Federline retains full custody of the children, but Spears has some overnight visits.
More women having fewer children: Many women in their early 40s are childless, and those who are having children are having fewer than ever before, according to the Census Bureau. The report, Fertility of American Women: 2006, also found women with graduate or professional degrees recorded the most births. About 36 percent of women who gave birth in the previous year were separated, divorced, widowed or unmarried. Unemployed women had about twice as many babies as working women, although women in the labor force accounted for the majority of recent births.
Colleges want lower drinking age: Duke, Dartmouth, and Tufts and others want the government to lower the drinking age from 21 to 18, saying current laws encourage dangerous binge drinking. However, Mothers Against Drunk Driving accuses the presidents of misrepresenting science and is even urging parents to consider the safety of colleges whose presidents have signed on. But colleges say the current law isn't working, and notes that while adults under 21 can vote and enlist in the military, they "are told they are not mature enough to have a beer." Furthermore, they say "by choosing to use fake IDs, students make ethical compromises that erode respect for the law."
Many college students consider suicide: According to research presented at the annual convention of the American Psychological Association, suicidal thoughts are more widespread at college than among the population in general. "Relief from emotional or physical pain" was the main reason students cited for suicidal thinking, followed by romantic problems. A general desire to end their lives and academic problems were also triggers. Lead authors say the results imply that suicidal thoughts could be as common of an experience as substance abuse, depression and eating disorders.
