The Mom behind Michael Phelps

Tuesday, August 12, 2008
Phelps' mom and sister say their hearts race when he hits the water.

This morning swim sensation Michael Phelps' mother Debbie and his sisters Hilary and Whitney appeared on the Today Show talking about Michael's three gold medal wins. According to Debbie, this year's Olympics has been like a "roller coaster" and the family has spent their time shopping or at the pool cheering on their son and brother. Says his sister: "Before he swims, there's nothing we can do to help him. My heart races--I'm so nervous!" Regarding the possibility of snagging eight gold medals, Debbie says: "We celebrate every race and are relieved when it's over. He feels no pressure to win eight gold medals." When asked if she would like to hug her son, Debbie says: "Yes, we can only contact Michael by text and phone. But the pool is his office."
