Guest blogger Karyn Bryant: In high school I played varsity soccer, basketball and softball--and I was hardly gorgeous or girly. So why I am so critical of the female athletes? Why do I expect them to kick ass and look like a supermodel at the same time?

I was watching Bob Costas interview three young ladies who medaled in fencing, and all I could think of was how I'd like to give them makeovers. What a b*tch I am! I've wondered, "What happened to the swimmers' boobs?" and thought, "Even though our gymnasts look scarily similar, that's the pretty one." So what? The "ugly" one just nailed her last routine, and I should be cheering for her, not taking a tenth-of-a-point reductions for bad eyeshadow or a questionable nose.
Rooting for the best looking male track and field star is understandable--it's that innate Darwinian desire we women have for the strongest potential mate (even if we're happily married). So to continue that train of thought, perhaps by cutting down the women I'm reducing the competition? Maybe I actually don't want them to look like supermodels after all. As I lounge on the couch, am I actually getting in touch with my primal instincts? I have been craving burgers and sex more lately...
I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in thinking this way. So even though--on the surface--the Olympics are all about the spirit of good competition and firing up national pride, I wouldn't be surprised to see a baby boom next May.
