Single Mom Picks Reality TV Over Kid

Is it okay for the single mother of a 3-year-old to uproot her life for a dating reality show? What if she brings the kid along?

Momlogic's Annie on her how she's a conflicted fan of the new Bachelor...

From the very first episode of The Bachelorette last season I rooted hard for Jason Mesnick. He was adorable, charming and looked like he was there for the right reason - to find love. But what was most attractive about him was that he was a single dad who loved his kid. His wife left him for another man and he was looking to find love again and a mother figure for his 3-year-old son. Deanna picked Jesse the snowboarder and I felt sad for Jason, but figured enough women would call in and Jason would be named the next Bachelor.

Well, it happened. He's been named The Bachelor. I'm very excited to see him find love, but I can't help but wonder, what if it were a single woman who had left her child at home to appear on The Bachelor? Then after hemming and hawing about how much she missed her child, she signed on to the be star of The Bachelorette the following season? I think people would be repulsed.

Society tends to look at single dads as attractive, sweet and caring. Single moms are seen as desperate losers who cannot keep a man. Jason's wife left him for another man. We feel bad for him and wonder how someone could do that. When a man leaves a woman many people look down on her as if she's done something wrong. Even if people realize that the man who left is a jerk, they often think the woman is an idiot for marrying him in the first place. There's a reason that Renee Zellweger's character Dorothy in Jerry McGuire was a widow and not a divorcee.

The title of this post was to prove a point. That most of society has a double standard when it comes to single dads versus single moms. It's been implied that Ty, Jason's son, will be a part of the show. While it certainly sounds cute, does it make this better or worse? I'm sure ABC will have provide some single mom bachelorettes for Jason to choose from. But I believe it's unlikely that they'll end up with the final rose. The Bachelor is scheduled to premiere in January 2009.

Interesting question. I think that the mothers themselves are not as inclined as a single dad to take that risk. However, I do see some being more willing to do so now that Jason is on the show.

As for a single mom being chosen at the end…I would say it may be harder to be on this show and make two families into one. I think pretty much anything can happen on this show though. So, we shall see!

I think that they would never choose The Bachelorette if she were a single mom.

That’s what Must Love Kids (TLC reality show) is about and I’m thinking… maybe Anonymous is right?? Even moms like myself who DID take that risk, were pretty quickly relegated from a prime time Tuesday airing to a Saturday at noon airing with no reruns. It may sound like it, but I don’t intend to complain - it’s just hard not to notice the change and it’s also a lot harder to catch the show now, so it seems that maybe audiences aren’t quite up for single moms and dating just yet, or are taking some time warming up to it…?
Just my thoughts.
