Momlogic political blogger Ronda Kaysen: The Democratic National Convention opens tonight with a call for unity. The lineup of female speakers -- Michelle Obama, Carolyn Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi, Barack's sister Maya Soetero-Ng - is a nod to Hillary Clinton and her legions of supporters. But if any woman in the party knows a thing about unity, it's Jill Biden.

Jill met Joe in 1975, just three years after his first wife and infant daughter died in a car crash. Joe Biden's young sons, Beau and Hunter, came with the package. When Jill married the senator from Delaware in 1977, his boys stood at the altar. They came along on the honeymoon, too. (They famously asked their father when are "we" getting married.)

Jill, then a high school teacher, gave up her job to raise Joe's boys and the daughter the couple had together. While raising the kids, she got a PhD in education, and began teaching at a community college in the 1990s. After three of her friends were diagnosed with breast cancer in the same year, she launched the Biden Breast Health Initiative to raise awareness about the disease.

This weekend, Jill Biden's quiet life in Delaware ended. Now the 57-year-old mom, teacher, and sometimes marathon runner is poised to run the race of her life and teach the country a thing or two about bringing people together.
