We asked teen expert and psychologist Dr. Lisa Boesky, author of  When to Worry: How to Tell If Your Teen Needs Help--And What to Do About It, what's behind the teen "bod mod" trend.

"Strange as it may be to adults, teens think body modification is cool. It's like a fashion accessory, and in order to rebel and shock parents today--regular tats and piercing don't do it anymore."

Even in their early 20s, children can still be struggling with identity--and body modification is one way to achieve it. There are many reasons why someone might go to such extremes to express individuality, Dr. Boesky says:

1. They are spiritually lacking and searching for meaning in life.

2. It's a way for them to "take back their body" on their terms if there is history of sexual abuse.

3. Taking control of their body is one way to feel as if they are in control.

4. And, most often, it's a way to shock society or simply set themselves apart.

If you think your child might be exploring the world of bod mod, Dr. Boesky says, "Try not to panic--focus on the underlying reason your child is taking such extreme measures. The problem for parents of kids over 18 (adults in the eyes of the law) is you can't rely on your parental authority, you have to rely on your parental relationship."

If you child is determined to go ahead with a body modification, make sure they:

  • Do the process in a clean environment by a body modification artist who specializes in the procedure they're interested in.
  • Talk to a physician about any potential risk (if they are armed with that information, someone might change their mind)
  • Explain to them how the permanence of some procedures might limit their choices later in life for spouses and jobs. Very few people who get bod mod are investment bankers.
Would you let your kid get into the bod mod trend?

Alot of what this ‘expert’ says is very limited. Firstly the reasons/logic behind becoming modified aren’t even close to all the reasons people have for modification. Some do it for the pain/endorphin release of the procedure, some do it as part of a residual self-image thing. Until the ‘expert’ had a say this was pretty spot on.
More extreme body modifications are rarely trendy. Tongue splitting, ‘elf ears’, scarification etc etc is usually the furthest thing from cool in any circles and are rarely performed on people with such a mentality.

All this article is seems to be a bunch of opinionated speculation surrounding body modifications. I speak from experience when I say it has nothing to do with trends. It has to do with what you find aesthetically pleasing as a person. While some procedures are extremely dangerous, most are not, and can be undone. Such as ear stretching. Not everyone goes to the crazy extremes that are depicted here. Most stop when it’s still small. It’s honestly sad that society relies on so much ignorance, and no one learns about what they are talking about, before talking about it. Next time, if you’re not the actual expert, don’t speak out against the subject.
