A Nebraska safe haven law allows parents to abandon their children, up to the age of 19 (not kidding), at a hospital without the fear of prosecution. Gary Staton said he "fell apart" after his wife died and left him with 9 children ranging in ages from 1 to 17 and claims he is unable to take care of them anymore.
The law was intended to provide a safe-haven for unwanted babies and lead to their eventual adoptions, but a revision to protect any child has lead to a loose interpretation of the law and an increasing number of older children being abandoned. Staton said he hoped his children would have a better future without him in their lives.
