Half a million women die in pregnancy and childbirth annually

A new report from the United Nations Children's Fund finds that over 500,000 women die each year from complications during pregnancy and childbirth worldwide. According to the "Progress for Children" report, the majority of deaths are in sub-Saharan Africa due to the limited financial and medical resources. Hemorrhaging, infection, complications arising from abortions, obstructed labor and HIV/AIDS are among the many causes of maternal death.
