I've Got Friends in Low Places

Mom with a Mouth says being friends with your gynecologist isn't as weird as it seems.

Halfway through my pregnancy, I had to switch over to a different OB/GYN. When I first met my new doctor, I was completely caught off guard by the fact that he was so young. I wondered if someone my age could possibly know anything about medicine, let alone delivering babies. But it didn't take long for me to see that he was a perfectly competent doctor -- not only was he thorough, but he was sweet and patient, answering all my crazy questions ("is it okay to push when I poop?" "is it okay to get a bikini wax?") with total sincerity and concern.

After the birth of my baby, my husband and I made plans to have dinner with him, and little by little, our patient/doctor relationship blossomed into a friendship. Now we email, text, grab sushi ... you name it. But last week, when I went in for my annual exam (pap, breast exam, the works), a lot of my friends and family wondered if I was embarrassed. "How can you be friends with your gynecologist? Isn't that weird?"  I'll admit, when I first walked in to the office, I wondered if it was strange -- with my "friend" peering "down there," giving me the thumbs up on all things vagina.

But business is business. He, of course, was so professional (and "doctorly") that I instantly forgot about the movie we were supposed to go see the following week and was able to focus on the issue at hand: me! Seriously, having a doctor as your friend is actually a great thing (especially for a quasi-hypochondriac). I can ask all my crazy questions, any time I want.

The bottom line, there's nothing wrong with being friends with your doctor. So what if he's seen my "privates"?! My husband's head was practically between my legs during the birth of our baby -- and I'm not embarrassed to be friends with him! Except for when he farts in public. But that's a whole other issue....

This doctor is crossing professional boundaries in a BIG way! He could find himself in trouble with his state medical board. Can you say “grooming”?
