Does Being a Parent Mean Selling Out?

Guest blogger Tedd Taskey: This was the deep secret kept so far buried in my own heart, I didn't realize it until my wife cornered me in the kitchen one night--and with tears in her eyes said, "We haven't seen you for years."

Ironically, I work from home and my wife and kids "see" me every day. Of course, she wasn't talking about my physical presence.

I had spent most of my 20s and 30s chasing a dream in Hollywood: writing, acting, directing; I always did just enough work to keep me hanging in there. Like the prom queen who returns every 100th call you make to her, I kept thinking... "ahhh. She does know I exist. I will get my shot with her." Eventually, she changed her number and I had to move on. Time to get a "real job." And with a wife, children and a mortgage, it was getting urgent.

As far as I was concerned, it didn't matter what I did outside of showbiz. Regardless, I was doomed to a life of something other than my real passion. It didn't really matter to me what I did for a real job. After all, what's the difference if you step off a 100-foot cliff or a 1,000-foot cliff? Either way, I was dead.

So, I painted on a corporate smile, straightened my tie and headed out every day to a job I coached myself into liking. Luckily, I was blessed to find good people and build great relationships. I was able to find things I enjoyed about a "real job" and continued to work in those areas. I was paying a mortgage and being responsible.

During this time, my wife (my saving grace) always encouraged me to keep the real passion I had for creative outlets, but I always had excuses why I couldn't. Eventually we moved out of state and then I knew for sure I had really stepped off that cliff. I could never look back.

Or could I?
