Lawmaker: Sterilizing Poor Women Will Fight Crime
A Louisiana State Rep says sterilizing poor women is the key to ending crime.
Louisiana State Rep John LaBruzzo, worried about the skyrocketing cost of welfare in his state, has devised a plan to pay low income women $1000 to get their tubes tied.
LaBruzzo says people receiving government aid such as food stamps are reproducing at a faster rate than more affluent, better-educated people, so he wants to pay women to stop reproducing. The lawmaker's plan will also cover other types of birth control, including vasectomies for men and tax incentives encouraging rich college graduates to have more children.
In response to critics who call the idea racist, sexist, and unethical, LaBruzzo says more whites are on welfare in Louisiana than other ethnic groups and that the plan would be completely voluntary. He says his sterilization program will provide poor people better opportunities to avoid welfare, simply because they would have fewer children to feed.
The plan would not, however, include abortion. LaBruzzo says he opposes abortion and would not support paying women to terminate their pregnancies.
Tell us --- would you support a plan to prevent the poor and uneducated from reproducing?
