It's Official: Lap Dances and Kids Don't Mix
Tuesday, September 9, 2008
A photo had us shaking our heads and asking ourselves whether we needed to alert the authorities. Luckily, we got an expert opinion.
Recently, in Somebody Call Child Services!, we put up a
shocking picture of a baby at what seemed to be a bachelor party, complete with a lap-dancing stripper--and asked readers if they thought it was a minor infraction or child abuse. We got many, many comments. But this one from Dr. Charles J. Sophy, Medical Director of Los Angeles County Children & Family Services, said it all:
"This is absolutely child abuse! Dad is using poor judgment and not making appropriate decisions to keep his child SAFE. Remember, just because a child is not being physically or sexually harmed or starved, child abuse includes emotional, physical, sexual and intellectual abuse. Unless you feel a child out of the womb is not a learning, growing, evolving human being, this IS child abuse. I hope that if anyone knows who these people are, they will take the appropriate steps."
The doctor has spoken.

This one incident may not have a lasting impact on the child’s intellectual development and shouldn’t necessarily be labeled as an act of child abuse in and of itself. But it certainly reveals a lot about how this father parents his child overall, and he should be investigated. His lack of judgment is obvious. If you don’t have a reliable sitter, you stay home. Period. Parenting requires one to be selfless. His priorities are horribly off base. If he’s willing to act this irresponsibly in front of others, imagine the parenting choices he makes behind closed doors.
