Palin and Obama's New 'Lipstick Line'

Instead of mudslinging, candidates are hitting the makeup drawer.

What's with all the lip during the presidential race? This campaign, so far, has mentioned lipstick more often than a couple of drag queens after a show. First, Sarah Palin compares herself to a pitbull in lipstick and then Obama turns around and compares the Republican campaign to a putting lipstick on a pig. That's a lot of beastly makeup references. Um, this campaign certainly is a horserace of different color.

With all the lipstick smack talk,
the only one probably licking its lips is the cosmetic industry, who, spotting a hole in the market, will no doubt start marketing their products to the animal kingdom.

What do you think of Obama's lipstick quip?

Yes, I understand that the forefathers came up with the ideal of “Copyright” to protect writers. On Oct. 19, 1976, Pres. Gerald Ford signed into law, Public Law 94-553 setting forth the law of the land in regard to copyrights. This law became effective January 1, 1978. Copyright Laws were made to protect the copyright owner. It gives them the exclusive rights to original material for a term which is equal to the length of the life of the creator plus 50 years. To break a copyright law you would have to illegally REPRODUCE copyrighted work. This means to duplicate copies of records, tapes, video cassettes, etc. So, here lies the problem with your accusation that the McCain campaign broke a law. They PLAYED a Heart song. There is a difference. They did not illegally reproduce a copy of it, they played the Heart CD. That is not illegal. That is the purpose of selling CD’s isn’t it? So people will play and listen to the bands music.

Sorry, but you still dont have the whole picture and there is more to it. The Republican party needed to ask Heart AND their record company for permission before using their song to avoid copyright infringement laws. Think about it in a commercial manner. Companies must get permission to use artists songs. The McCain campaign knew better as they are ALREADY being sued by Jackson Browne, when they illegally used his song early in August too. Hence, proof that they knew they needed permission and are already in a lawsuit, but choose to go around it as those sneaky old Republicans have been doing alot of lately. They knew they should have asked, it probably would have been declined which is the artists AMERICAN right, and they could have asked someone else.

Rachel Is this how you pick candidates at election time? They played a song and that was wrong? Give me a break! That is a poor excuse for a reason, don’t you think? As I said, it was petty on the Wilson sisters part to throw a hissy fit about the song. I guess they just wanted America to know who they support. Point made, Wilson sisters. Good luck on your tour! HaHa!!!

I understand you’re really proud cause you can use Wikipedia, but allow me to clear this up, I work in copyright law. CK1: You can not PLAY songs for a group of people anytime you want to. Copyright law doesn’t just cover duplications, it covers playtime as well. Even restaurants, should they choose to play music for their patrons, must by a license from the “big 3” Time Warner, RCA, you get the picture. And then they can only use the signed artists of those labels. It sounds silly, but if you ever go into a mom & pop cafe and they’re playing a Kenny Chesney CD, they’re probably breaking the law. HOWEVER: Rachel- no, they probably won’t get into any trouble, because a) they have a limited license for the song—not improbable because they can afford it, or b) the license of copy holder doesn’t care (NOT the singers). Lots of politicians have a “theme song” and most people just let it go—prosecuting private play is difficult because the lines are so blurry. Now play nice.
