Obama and McCain Square off in First Debate

Senators Barack Obama and John McCain squared off in the first of three presidential debates last night in Mississippi. The two candidates spent the first part of the debate, which was supposed to focus on foreign policy, discussing the economic crisis. Obama questioned McCain's ability to boost the U.S. economy considering he supported the "failed economic policies promoted by President Bush" over the past 8-years.

McCain, who refused to look Obama in the eye when speaking, said his rival "doesn't understand" the issues facing the United States and has refused to acknowledge the surge was a success. Senator Obama said McCain likes to believe the war started in 2007 with the surge but, "the war started in 2003, and at the time when the war started, [McCain] said it was going to be quick and easy. [McCain] said we knew where the weapons of mass destruction were. [McCain was] wrong."

Governor Sarah Palin (who was absent from the post-debate spin room media appearances last night) and Senator Joe Biden will meet in their only debate next Thursday, October 2. Senators McCain and Obama will square off twice more on October 7 and 15.

I found it very interesting that McCain would barely look at Obama. To me, that kind of says a lot.

I agree with PP. The fact that McCain would not look Obama in the eyes is verly indicative that he is clearly afraid of Obama.
