Palin: Do Politics and Motherhood Go Hand in Hand?

Friday, September 5, 2008

Guest blogger Leslie Adler, an attorney, asks Sarah Palin: "Do your politics always have to support your views as a mom?"

Sarah Palin and John McCain

Many moms whose 17-year-old daughters were impregnated by an 18-year-old guy whose MySpace page reads "Ya' F**k With Me, I'll Kick Your Ass" would be screaming "Statutory Rape" and lamenting about how they wish their child had been better educated in the avoidance of teenage pregnancy--but not Sarah Palin.

She proudly paraded Levi Johnston, the father of the unborn child of her 17-year-old daughter Bristol before a nationally televised audience at the Republican National Convention as a member of her family (though I have seen nothing to support the rumor that she was wearing an engagement ring) and, while I get that she is in the middle of a history-making election and she has positions and policies to defend, I am concerned--given her new visibility and the power of her new image--about the messages she may be conveying to young women, to our daughters.

This is not a partisan argument. I understand that the right wing supports Bristol "choosing life in the midst of a difficult situation." I don't want to go there; I just want to know, as a mom...

Renee You missed the point I was trying to make completely. Women should support women. Whether you are a stay at home mom, or a working mom, you do have a say in this world. This is what Sarah Palin represents. You CAN be a mom and you CAN do anything you choose to and that’s ok. You don’t have to be a man to be a leader in your community, your state, or in America. Honestly, I think Condoleezza Rice is in the perfect position for her and should remain there. She is doing a fantastic job. I think Sarah Palin could do a fantastic job, too, if given the chance. It seems this Presidential race has turned into Obama vs. Palin, doesn’t it? She is running for VP, not the Presidency. The negative reporting about her has really turned things around for the Republican party. Women don’t like it when other women are viciously attacked. She has been put through the ringer with rumors and blasphemy. But, like every strong woman she is still standing proud. Sarah Palin has proven to me that she can take the heat and brush it off her shoulder. She’ll be a great Vice President. With Sarah Palin and Condoleezza Rice working for John McCain he will be getting some great support in the White House.

CK, I don’t think I missed your point. You are saying “women should support women”. What if we dont agree with a PARTICULAR woman? I will not blindly support any woman, man, Republican or Democrat. I am an independent thinker and I gather information. We have only had a little over a week to digest a lady that will be making huge decisions on our behalf. It shocks me how so many automaticly jumped on board with her, and I have never even heard of her. I have been scolded on this site for questioning her abilities! That is what we are supposed to do as a voter. You said she has already proven to you that “she can take the heat”, and that seals the deal? Maybe you live in Alaska and know more about her than an average person, then I could understand why you think people like me should already support her. I am still digesting the fact that her kids are so young still. I would have never sacrified the time I had with them for anything. That makes her and I miles apart already. And yes CK, I do support women. I would love to see the right woman as VP and/or President. It doesnt have to be all or nothing.

Governor Palin is right on the money with her beliefs, at least she does not say what she thinks” people want to hear”. She states her thoughts…not meaning you personally should share them. As far as leading the country, she is exactly what we need in the Vice Presidency position. Our country needs all the help we can get to elect leaders that believe in God and may he watch over us during this most important election. People need to keep their thoughts and remarks about the Palin family to themselves…the only one in that family running for office is Sarah Palin, and she is doing a dang good job. Thank-you.

I appreciate Ms. Adler’s question, is simply something that I wonder as well. Do our politics have to be in sync with what we tell out children and families or do they change as the family changes? Notice it is not a mother question but a parent question. For example… Can I be an elected official if I believe in the need to censoring reading material, yet I buy my children all the banned books on the list because it is what they want to read? My politics are one thing and my family business is another? Really? is that how it works?

I think this site should stay away from politics completely. I am not fond of this site. I recently joined and it seems that Momlogic is very judgemental of people in general, not just politicians. I have noticed that momlogic always pick someone or some group apart. I guess we won’t be having any recipe swaps today. That is what I originally thought this site was about, which toys had good ratings, what plastics are safe, good job so and so look what a great thing you did. Not so much. I’m dissappointed I think I will complain to myself..lol…i’m done with you, you awful Momlogic. More like Nologic.
