Sarah Palin: A Pit Bull in Lipstick

Thursday, September 4, 2008

The Vice Presidential nominee wows the crowd with a memorable speech.

History was made last night as the Republican Party nominated its first woman candidate for the vice-presidency.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin took detractors head-on, confronting questions about her experience while mocking Senator Barack Obama's. She went on to praise John McCain as a man who "knows how tough fights are won."

• The delegates erupted with laughter when Palin joked, "You know, they say the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick." She continued punching Obama, saying "in small towns, we don't quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they are listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren't listening," referencing a comment Obama made in a closed-door meeting.

• The Obama campaign immediately responded after the speech, issuing a statement; "well-delivered, but it was written by George Bush's speechwriter and sounds exactly like the same divisive, partisan attacks we've heard from George Bush for the last eight years."

• Palin saved some of her harshest criticism for the press. "Here's a little newsflash for all those reporters and commentators: I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion. I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this country."

• Because the primetime-scheduled speech ran late, the Republicans were forced to scrap her biographical film.  Palin filled in the blanks, telling the homespun story of her family, "You know, from the inside, no family ever seems typical, and that's how it is with us. Our family has the same ups and downs as any other, the same challenges and the same joys."

• Before Palin took the stage, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani fired up the crowd, continuing the attacks on Obama, labeling him a "celebrity senator" with no real executive experience.

Earlier speeches included similar lines of attack from former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

In the face of all the partisan rhetoric, one gentle moment served as a counterpoint. Governor Palin's daughter Piper combed her little brother's hair--to make sure it looked just right.

Tonight: John McCain takes the stage to accept the Republican presidential nomination.
Speakers will include:
  • Gov. Tim Pawlenty (Minn.)
  • Gov. Charlie Crist (Fla.)
  • U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback (Kan.)
  • U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez (Fla.)
  • John McCain
What did you think of Palin's speech?

This is a follow up to several comments presented in the other opinions. First, referring to her as middle class do you know her position on the energy commission was over 6 figures. That must be a different working class than where I come from. Also, I heard continued devisive remarks to appeal to our emotions and fears rather than our common sense. Also let’s not forget the term Maverick is being thrown around loosely. John McCain wanted a Democrat for VP until the extremes in the party threatened him, he backed down for his party and the election, not “Country First”. People supporting her mention “choices” that she was able to make. Does she want you to make personal choices in your life?

And the Bush family and the McCains’…they’re WORKING class families, right? With their millions and millions of dollars…?!?! Yeah…so not elitist. That’s what’s wrong with the world—SHEEPLE like you!

UM…Kate, the bible on tolerance…you implied you couldn’t find any Bible text on “tolerance…” Gee here’s something you MIGHT remember: “Love one another.” Just a thought.

Sarah stepped up to the occasion and showed just how capable she can be at spewing religious right crap at the world. Yes, she was truly passionate and articulate and has an extremely narrow worldview (perhaps her lack of travel?). It is also amazing how republicans spin the sexist/feminist issue: It’s sexist to ask the ‘tough’ questions about her experience and leadership abilities-HAH-if men and women are equal, she should be able to handle it! Please-she is a heartbeat away from the presidency…she needs to be able to handle tough questions. But last night she showed she should be able to take what she gives… last night she belittled and insulted a large majority of Americans and equated herself to a ‘pitbull with lipstick’. Just because we don’t all live in small towns does not mean that we are not worth listening to! I am even more insulted by the fact republicans admire how she is supportive of her unmarried, pregnant 17 year old daughter as if they are the only ones that would. Most people I know would be supportive of their children and just because people are pro-choice does not mean they are pro-abortion. I hate how republicans always bring in God, Guns, and Gay issues to divide our country rather than focus on the war and the plummeting economy Bush has left us.

I think she made the democrats nervous! And rightfully so. She is more than qualified for the #2 spot and is even arguably more qualified than Obama for the #1 spot. It’s more obvious than ever now that Barack doesn’t have any experience managing anything but a campaign.

The press are all demoBRATS. They always cut into EVERYTHING a republican says. Sarah Palin is awesome and what our country needs. We all know mothers can work and still be a good mother. Most of her children are much older and can help with the younger children. I know most older kids help with younger brothers and sisters. Some people just like to complain often.

Let me follow up on my comment to Lesa: I have studied the Bible from both a scholarly and a religious standpoint. I get frustrated when people who don’t know that they are talking about try to explain the words of the Bible and they get it wrong. I asked for specific chapters and verses because I truly want to know where people are getting the idea that the Bible supports “tolerance.” Yes, I know that Jesus teaches us to love one another, but you have to understand what Jesus was talking about when he said those words. He was talking about the church - not the entire world. People take the Bible’s words out of context all the time, and the story needs to be set straight. Please go to the following post that I found online, as it clearly explains how I feel about this issue: http://brentbarnett.blogspot.com/2006/11/biblical-unity.html

She gave a great speech, and I am definatly voting for Mc Cain/Palin in November. :0) I don’t why people are so fired up that she was “snarky” What, Biden can be snarky, but she can’t? Why is there such a double standard? This is an election, the canidates are going to get snarky with each other. The whole point is to say what they will do and show the differences between them and their opponent. As for the whole tolerance thing, the only thing lefties tolerate is THEIR own beliefs. If you disagree you are deemed as an intolarant moron. Nice. (said with all the sarcasm I can muster)

This is her choice as to whether he our her husband are the stay at home parent. What about the families that both parents have to work and the children spend most of their time in a day care. I am a stay at home mom, and have been since my first child was born in 2003. I love Sarah Palin she is just who we need in Washington. She does understand everyday women. Yes she was on the attack, but she did not get into politics to coddle people. She got into politics because she wanted to stop the corruption. She has done that in Alaska, and much of the corruption was in her own party. Do you really think that Obama would stand up against people in his own party. Absolutely not. This shows by his VP pick, I guess McCain is old but Biden is a spring chicken. Age and gender should not have anything to do with how you vote. You should be voting with the candidates that would be the best for our country. I could go on and on about how much I love the McCain Palin ticket and How much I do not trust the Obama Biden ticket, but I think that all of us are intitled to make our own choices. Just as Sarah Palin has the right to choose what she wants as her career. Last time I checked this was a country built on freedom. I think we should all remember that and vote to keep our country free.

The difference between Sarah Palin and a pit bull, is that a pit bull mother would do everything to protect her puppies. Unlike Pres Bush, Sarah Palin apparently believes some children Should be left behind. Country first! Your children? Well, wherever they fall after that. Palin’s daughter, a minor child, is getting married to another teen. Why would a mother allow a bad situation to get worse by condoning or possibly pushing this marriage. 50% of marriages fail, let’s throw in that they are both teens and every move they will make will be spotlighted by the press. Yes, that is all very healthy for a young teen mother. Her son is going to Iraq. As the proud wife of former military, I honor her son’s choice. But why is this mother announcing her child’s departure and his branch? Do you know what kind of security will be needed to protect her son, the child of the republican party’s VP nom? What about the endangerment of those that fight with him? Her baby, her special needs baby, was passed around from person to person during Sarah Palin’s sppech like Cracker Jack at a Dodger game! He is a Down’s Syndrome baby, a baby sensitive to noise and strangers. But yet he was passed all the way down the line of family, including to his 6 year old sister! Nice photo op! If dad is going to step up to the plate and help her, why didn’t he start right then and hold his baby for 30 minutes? I have interviewed hundreds of parents of special needs children and not one parent talked about how much more work they plan on taking on,; they spoke about curtailing their work schedules and lives to accommodate their children. But….Country first! The difference between a pit bull and Hockey mom may be lipstick, but the difference between Sarah Palin and a pit bull, is that a pit bull, one even raised in the wild, would protect her puppies and lose her own life defending them.

To Debi You obviously do not understand the dynamics of a large family. You’re comment about Sarah Palin’s son being passed around was an ignorant one. I have four children and two grandchildren. In my family, we do the exact same thing. Everyone LOVES holding the baby. That’s normal! It is NOT neglect, it is how a loving family comes together to take care of one another. Your comment was offensive to those of us who truly understand how much love goes into a large family. During Sarah’s speech, my husband and I both looked at each other and said, “AAAWWW, that was so cute”, when the young sister was fixing her little brothers hair. It warmed our hearts. As far as the comment about Sarah Palin condoning or pushing her daughter to get married was also ridiculous. From experience in this same situation, I understand that if the two teenagers want to get married it is up to THEM not the parent. You can talk to them and give them your thoughts on the situation but ulimately it is THEIR decision to make. Whether it turns out good or not…it is not the parents life to live but the teenagers. Parents who love their children want them to be happy. I am sure Sarah Palin wants her daughter to be happy. If getting married to the FATHER of her child makes her happy then why discourage it? They should, at the very least, have the CHANCE to make it work, for themselves and for their baby. Apparently, you don’t get what Sarah Palin is all about when you say she is not protecting her children. She got into the PTA so she could have a say in her children’s education. She got into the city council and also became mayor so she could have a say in her children’s community. She became a Governor for an even bigger reason: She is making a better place for her children to live. She is thinking about their future. She is not sitting around complaining about the world we live in but trying to make it better. Why? As a mother, I would guess for her CHILDREN. She wants them to have a good future. She is setting a good example for them as a mother and as a leader. Rather than chastize her like men have done for years why not

I hope and pray that everyone trully looks at the individuals that are running for office by their record and their plans rather than “Oh I really think they’re super!” I really feel that this country needs to make some drastic changes and I just don’t see that happening with the Republican party that has been in charge. I work in a school system where they have phased out family coverage for all but one employee. To have family coverage will cost her nearly $1000/month. She makes $13.10/hour. Do the math. Her story is not unique. She’s a working mother. Workers offered health care has gone from approximately 75% to about 63% in the state of MN. My husband who is struggling to start a business was able to find work at the RNC last week. He said it was an eye opener. The next president and vice president needs to elected on ideas and plans. I am an independent, blue collar, working, married, mom of 3 wonderful sons struggling to take care of my family. Check into the facts that the McCain/Palin ticket are repeating. As for my family we’ll be voting for Obama/Biden.

Whew! After reading all of the comments, many of the McCain/Palin supporters refuse to actually listen to what each party is for and against. 1.Obama: opposes overturning Roe vs Wade McCain:Wants to overturn it. Hmmm that sounds like someone trying to dictate a woman’s choice. I am not for abortion, however, I am for allowing a woman to make a personal choice about her body, especially in the case of rape or incest. I am also against allowing others moral judgements and personal beliefs interferring with my life. 1 point Obama Obama: Would pump $75 billion into the economy via tax cuts and direct spending targeted to working families, seniors, homeowners and the unemployed McCain: Would lower the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 25 percent. Would allow first-year deduction of equipment and technology investments and establish a permanent research and development tax credit equal to 10 percent of wages spent on R&D. another hmmm…nothing about the people that actually put the millions in the pockets of the elite. 1 point Obama Obama: Supports the Supreme Court decision granting foreign terrorism suspects at Guantanamo Bay a right to challenge their detention in civilian courts. McCain: Opposes the Supreme Court decision granting foreign terrorism suspects at Guantanamo Bay a right to challenge their detention in civilian courts. I understand everyone’s feelings about the terroristic acts that happened on 9/11. I actually worked in a wireless call center that were fielding calls from victims trapped in the rubble. So in essence I was there. I was angry, upset, and in shock and I still feel traumatized. However….not ALL prisoners in Guantanamo Bay are terrorists and should have the right to defend themselves. I’m sorry if some of you feel otherwise, but first and foremost, they are still human beings and Americans pride themselves in being objective…innocent until proven guilty…so I say give them their chance to say…”Hey, it wasn’t me”, like we give every criminal in the US. There are many instances the Obama and McCain agree on—-however, in McCain’s case he will infringe on too many of MY personal freedoms and rights, whereas Obama would allow me and my family a choice. I would rather go with the candidate that gives me, the taxpayer, the full-time employee, The American who is “pulling the lever” a choice. As for Palin——not my cup of tea, even if she wasn’t running for VP.

Hello! Many of the men who have served our country have children too!! Why dont you question their love for their children??? I believe your words were ” this is her life, she is entitled to it, so there is no need to make comments about her life or family…i think thats what you said, right?..Also fathers can raise children just as well as mothers because if you say that nobody can replace a mother, then single dads fail at raising children?? I dont think so. Finally, Sarah Palin could decide to become a stay-at-home mom, but obviously someone needs to lead our country, and I’m thankful she is willing to sacrafice staying at home to do it!! Don’t criticize someone if you are not willing to do the job yourself!
