Guest blogger Luisa Frey: The words "family reunion" can cause major panic and cold sweats. Here are a few simple tips to help you live another day after a family get-together.

frustrated woman at family reunion
I'm pleased to report that I've survived about ten annual reunions of my husband's family and have mostly fond memories.

Here are a few strategies that can help make a family reunion a fun event for all involved.

Change Expectations
If you and Great Aunt Sadie (or your mother-in-law) have never totally seen eye-to-eye, don't expect sudden bliss during your family reunion. While this might be a good opportunity to try to bond with certain family members, it might also be helpful to purposefully steer clear of any family members who act like vinegar when added to your oil.

Personal Space
Our first reunion (which usually numbers about 20 adults and children) was in a large, shared rented house. This was too much togetherness and it was a nightmare getting all the kids to bed. Since then, we annually rent side-by-side condos at a resort. This way, we are close in proximity, but can retreat to our own space.

Shared Meals
Since our condos have kitchenettes, everyone makes their own breakfast and lunch. For dinners, each family unit is pre-assigned to make and serve a meal to the whole crew on one night. That way, if folks want to do their own thing during the day, at least there's the opportunity to mingle with all family members at dinner time.

Duration
DO NOT -- I REPEAT -- DO NOT think the "honeymoon" will last longer than a week. Our family reunions last five days and six nights (but who's counting?!). A week gives you enough time to bond, but is short enough just in case Great Aunt Sadie once again manages to get under your skin.
