A school in Texas has forbidden a teenager from wearing her rosary necklace because the school says the beads have become gang affiliated. Tabitha Ruiz says she's tried several times to wear her prayer beads, but is repeatedly stopped by school security guards. Oddly enough, Dallas Police say that this is actually a problem. "Lately they've been seen wearing religious jewelry such as the rosary worn by gang members, so it is a factor," Sr. Cpl Kevin Janse says. Ruiz and her mother say they'll take the school district to court if they have to.

Gang members can make anything affiliated with them, so does that mean you are just going to stop anything? I think the school district is being ignorant and I hope they take them to court

First of all, a rosary is NOT supposed to be worn as a necklace or any kind of body jewelry to begin with, unless you specifically buy a rosary ring or bracelet. Anyone that strong in their faith would know that it is actually blasphemous to wear a rosary. If you want a religious symbol to wear for prayer or protection, wear a patron saint’s medal, or a scapular, or even perhaps a simple cross. And yes, many gangs are using crosses and rosaries as symbols of their “faith and devotion” to the gang. Also quite blasphemous. She is allowed to carry the rosary in her pocket or purse.

Agreeing with Lori here any Catholic can tell you that you do not wear them around your neck, at all.

There are medals you can pin to yourself, but rosaries are not necklaces.

Ignoring the fact that this girl seems to be using her rosary in what is considered an inappropriate manner, either she should be allowed the freedom to wear her religious symbol or the school should have uniforms. I know that sounds harsh but when any logos could be offensive and wearing shirts without logos could raise the question of gang affiliated colors your only options are to lighten up or sensor everything.

Personally I’m all for a moderate or strict uniform policy in places where gang activity is such an issue. It does mean they’ll find other ways to stand out, but it severly limits their options.

The problem with “gang related attire” is that gangs many ways to show devotion. Shoe laces, hair pins, belts, hats, make-up, clothes, etc… Unless we are going to ban all of the above, I don’t think there’s much that can be done. If we are going to allow gang recruitment in music, videos and so forth, we really can’t complain about the violence that the ACLU claims these terrorists have a right to.
