Smells Like Tween Spirit

Should middle school girls really be walking around smelling like a French cathouse?

Yes, junior high stinks-- but not for the reason you'd think. Just ask 11 middle school students in New Hampshire and their driver -- who were taken to a hospital after a girl spilled a bottle of perfume on the bus.

Michael Gamache, the District Fire Chief, reported that kids were vomiting and short of breath because the perfume stench was, "very concentrated ... pungent," The student has not been identified and neither has the brand of perfume. That'll probably make the offending perfume manufacturer breathe a sigh of relief.

But what are tweens running around dousing themselves in perfume anyway? When some of us were kids, a little spray of Love's Baby Soft was all we were allowed to wear.

What do you think? Does the idea of perfume for young girls reek?

actually i was in middle school only 6-7 years ago and it was the boys who were dumping cologne not girls. I would not be surprised if it was not a girl but a boy, and with axe body spray. Boys were constantly spraying that stuff all over, almost on a weekly basis. Girls tended to be more discreet with perfume. I remember at least three times we were evacutated from the classroom because boys thought it was fun to spray their axe all over.

I don’t think Jr High or High School children should be wearing cologne, for the same reason people in a crowded work area should not wear it, there could be other around with allergies. Children are crammed into classrooms, with little personal space. Make due with all that scented deodorant and leave the perfume at home!! I knew a boy in Jr High who broke his bottle of cologne in the bottom of his bag, and spent the WHOLE year with the stink following him, LOL!!

Most sicknesses that come from smells are psychosomatic (a learned reaction like Pavlov’s dogs) and the smells themselves are not actually doing any harm. Please remember that the next time you think you’re getting a headache from someone’s perfume.
