Palin: Trailblazer or Bad Mother? You Decide!

Moms debate over whether Sarah Palin would make a good vice president.

trailblazer_cover_270.jpg

There is no bigger news this week than vice presidential hopeful Sarah Palin. Mothers everywhere are at odds over whether this mom of five is fit to be VP.

McCain met Sarah Palin for the first time in February at a National Governors Association meeting, where they chatted for 15 minutes. They met in person for a second time last week, when he invited her to his ranch in Sedona, Arizona. There, McCain offered her a spot on his ticket. Despite barely knowing her, McCain has called Sarah Palin his campaign "soul mate."

In Alaska, Governor Palin...

• Challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill.

• Used her veto and cut budgetary spending.

• Put a stop to the "bridge to nowhere" that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.

• She's also being investigated for the firing of a commissioner for public safety, Walter Moneghan. Mr. Moneghan claims that he was fired as commissioner because he refused to fire a state trooper who was divorcing Palin's sister. Plus, her opponents claim she simply doesn't have enough experience to be Commander in Chief, should something happen to John McCain.

The governor of Alaska is the mother of 5 children--Track, 18; Bristol, 17; Willow, 13; Piper, 7; and Trig, 4 months. As we all know by now, 17-year-old Bristol is pregnant, and 4-month-old Trig has Down syndrome. It has been reported that Palin went back to work just three days after giving birth to Trig.

The conversation got heated at momlogic yesterday, when we ran "The 'Juno' Effect Strikes Washington."

Mom Kate said: "Don't waste your vote on someone who will open up Alaska to drillers and take away women's reproductive rights. Just because she is a woman doesn't mean she is good for women."

But not everyone agrees with Kate...not by a long shot. Go to PAGE TWO to hear other moms' opinions.

Seriously people what are the real issues here. It’s NOT her daughter getting pregnant out of wedlock. Come on, I’m curious to know how many of you had SEX before marriage. Just because you didn’t get pregnant doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. It kills me to think that people LIVE together now a days while not being married and that seems to be okay w/ society. (& have sex) But holy crap when someone gets pregnant out of wedlock that is not okay. No I don’t believe her daughter should go to the justice of peace as someone said. What good does that do?? It’s just a piece of paper. I wish I knew the statistics on how many people have sex before marriage….why does it make those people any better than her daughter???

Wow, all this chatter is shocking. Is this really 2008? No one is asking whether Obama can be a good father while being President. This sexism has to stop. Her family and gender have nothing to do with whether she could be VP. I am a staunch Democrat and will NOT be voting for McCain but I’ll defend to the death my opinion that women MUST be treated equally. Period. Hillary went through this and now Palin… and little do those chatters know that the more crap Palin receives from the media (like this) the more likely it is that she WILL be VP. Women have been multi-tasking since the beginning of time, ladies! Her political and personal views are definitely in line with the Republican agenda… why is anyone surprised??? (Again, this has NOTHING to do with the number of kids she has or her gender!!!)

P.S. For the dolts here that are not aware of it, Gov. Palin’s first veto was used to STOP the law that would’ve taken benefits AWAY from gay Alaskan govt. workers. See how she imposes her views?

PALIN..YES!!!!! About time we have an intelligent woman in a position of power to make a difference! I can’t wait to see her as V.P. to shake up the liberals giving our country’s power to the Muslims (TERRORISTS) AND OUR MONEY TO OUR ENEMIES! About time and a long time over due! Palin, you have my support 100%!!!!

Ok People wake up….. I did not hear a word of her talking about pro-choice…. Instead it is going to be her choice. If you vote her and Mccain in watch Roe V Wade be changed there are 4 judges up for change and believe me it will happen. I will never vote for her and Mccain now. I was going to vote Mccain but now that he picked a woman who stole the federal money that was funded for the bridge, she kept it and never returned it. Pro- choice and this ticket will not vote this way now I am voting for Obama/Biden

has anyone stopped to see that it appears that this election could be an affirmative action one? there is an african american male, a lady- or a woman, if you will, and two old guys- or older gentlemen, if you will- discrimination over sex and age should not be an issue should it? shouldn’t the best candidates be elected for preseident, regardless of gender, age, or race ? but seriously, and historically speaking, once elected to office, haven’t democrats always raised taxes, regardless of what they have said during their campaigns? and what about the republicans- isn’t big business their objective? the issues need to be addressed- we have abortion rights already- dont the democrats agree with more federal funding - which means higher taxes for all- for abortion and partial birth abortion- which means big bucks for abortion personnel, and how about gay marriage- the gays want to be respected and equal with the status quo and thus they feel shoudnt they be considered as normal people too and have gay marriage be their right? who stands for that- democrats or republicans. and stem cell research- does that even work?- didn’t i hear a top scientist say last year that even he is not sure if it works well- that they are doing reasearch on it- and this costs big bucks- will federal funding go to this research and will not ALL our tax dolars increase? there are alot of hidden things in theses issues that we need to consider, arent there? we cant just look at thing at face value as the media would like us to, dont they? ther are alot of questions i would like answered and i do not hear them- thanks

Regardless of where you sit politically, why on earth would you be so sexist as to even ask this question in the year 2008??? No one is asking Obama if he’s home to put his kids to bed; no one asked Arnold Schwarzenegger if he is/was home with his children. As a woman, I am offended you’d ask, and as a liberal, I’m embarrassed that this is a ploy to debunk her. Debunk her with arguments based on where she sits on the issues and get off the personal attacks.

Those of you who so fervently defend Palin because she is a strong woman are totally missing the point. She is running to be second in line to the Presidency. Her qualifications have been glorified and Obama’s diminished in the typical spin machine of the Republican Party—the party which has over the last eight years disregarded the rights of citizens and spit in the face of the Constitution. Her speech reflected nothing more than a continuation of what has been wrong with the leadership of the Republican Party. They are mean-spirited. Did we hear anything about how they plan to make the lives of the ordinary people any better? This is the party who plans to make the tax cuts to the wealthy permanent. This is the party, regardless of the words they spew, that doesn’t have or believe in a plan for affordable healthcare. Look into Sarah’s gubernatorial and mayoral record to see just exactly what she did accomplish during her short tenure and then decide if this is the direction you want this country to take. Alaska ranks near the bottom in regard to social issues like healthcare, education, and specifically low graduation rates. Our numbers are at the top for rape, abuse against women and children and alcoholism. Governor Palin’s response to social issues is to cut funding to programs like Covenant House which provides temporary housing and guidance for homeless youth. This is the height of irresponsibility in a state so wealthy that it can forego a state sales and income tax and actually pay its citizens an annual dividend. Sarah says she is going to reform Washington. It is all spin. Don’t fall for it. She is a talented politician with no substance. Yes, I am going to vote for experience. But, I am also going to vote for wisdom. I am voting for people who have a strong understanding of the perilous journey ahead. There are issues to address—the economy, healthcare, energy, the Wars in the Middle East, our image among world leaders which has diminished during the Bush terms, government intrusion into our privacy, and our continuing loss of those liberties afforded us by the Constitution are all at risk if we elect another term of Republicans to serve. I like Sarah Palin, but I know that she isn’t the person I want second in line to the President of the US. She

Outing your 17 year old unwed daughter to the world so you can run for VP is probably the most selfish thing she could do. Oh and she also outed the boy friend—way to go—don’t expect any Christmas cards from that family. These kids will now live their lives with this added explanation after their names, unwed pregnant daughter/daughter’s boyfriend of the Republican VP candidate. Great just the scarlet letter I’d want my kids to wear. Also, lets be real, if she was a democrat the family values crowd would be ready to take away her parental rights.

People let’s get the fact’s right PLEASE…as other’s read these opinions. Obama is a 1st term Senator with less than 150 day’s in office…which he won by default by getting the other candidate disqualified! Which is what he should be for President. Only in America could you get elected to the toughest job in th land, by being a community organizer. Whatever that is. I still can’t believe he is able to run for the office when he’s had known terrorist affiliation’s. Of course if you watch CBS, NBC, MSNBC, or CNN, you don’t know about that. You can’t even become a federal Correction’s Officer in a prison with that information. Isn’t amazing to be able to get hired to do a job, and then immediately go out and try to get a different one, (not doing the 1st one mind you). & with full benefit’s. The attack’s on Mrs. Palin are digusting. Let’s see how many out there can match her resume at there 20 year reunion! She has done much with her time on this earth so far, with hard work, not Hot Air! If any are perfect or your children perfect please stand up! I for one am a mom of 3, with 2 17 yr. old’s & a 2yr old. My husband & I are both military veteran’s. We both know what it means to serve your country. The Commander in Chief ie: Your President is the military’s boss. When you work under someone, you would like to know your boss know’s something about your job. Especially when it’s your life on the line at a moment’s notice. Mcain & Palin both know service & sacrifice for there country. There not angry American’s clinging to religion and gun’s. They just have these to fight for us. But two spoiled lawyer’s with Harvard degree’s (helped paid for by the taxpayer’s, your welcome) “have never been proud of their country, & refuse to where that flag pin”, & stay 20 years in a church that preaches hatred to white people, & america! They say that ignorance is bliss, I say it’s down right scary! Thousand’s of of people are voting just to see a black man as president! (Did you see the DNC?) How many white people would get away saying that with out being tard & feathered! I see that it’s OK to be a racist if

I am the mother of six (biologically) and one of them has special needs too. I have worked in and out of the home and went to college. I have both homeschooled and at times had my children in the public school system. I don’t have a nanny, but I am still able to be a mom! Don’t tell me Palin cannot be a mom and a VP in her situation. It is funny, nobody would ever question my hubby for going to work being the father of so many children, even if I died. Most have not taken issue with me over it, but then again, I did not threaten their political agendas. I only find prejudice towards me because we had more than 2 children, as if that is a sin. I have lost major respect for the feminist movement over Palin. I have learned they have LIED to all of us. They do NOT want to see ALL women succeed. They want to see their AGENDA succeed, at the expense of MANY American women who are not in full agreement with their AGENDA. How sad! I respect Palin and admire her. I have longed to see political reform and I believe she is a person who has the guts to do it.

Here is some information about Sarah Palin and Alaska in general… In case you wanted to educate yourself and get beyond the smoke screen that the Republican Party would like to dazzle you with. Here in Alaska because the population is so low and spread out comparatively, we do not have the amount of issues that might be normal in medium sized cities in the “outside”. “Outside” is what Alaskans call everywhere else. We do not even have close to the percentage of crime or traffic issues or housing issues or school issues or health care issues etc. I use the term, living in a bubble, for this unique life experience. So I would say that Mrs. Palin even as Governor has only small town experience because of this. I keep hearing things like, she runs the largest state in the union. She has experience as Commander and Chief of the AK National Guard. Are you serious? First we are the largest state in land mass only. Alaska is ranked 50th in percentage of population of all the states. Are we really supposed to believe that Gov. Palin confers with the Guard at all, with the possible exception of photo ops. As for Christian family values, I bet the Wasilla Police Chief (and his family) and the Alaska State Safety Commissioner (and his family) whom were both fired by Mrs. Palin on some petty personal vendettas, would beg to differ with that claim. Not to mention the well being of her own niece. How do you get child support from a father if he has no job? I guess being in the position of power trumps family values. Sounds a lot like the same old Republican power trip to me. Gov. Palin also claims not to be a Washington elitist, I would agree with that at this time. She is an Alaskan style elitist. When she had the opportunity to equalize the Board of Fish and Game to represent a more diverse population of Alaskans, she did not. Instead choosing to place Big Game Guides and Sports Hunters into open seats on the Board. Gov. Plain has ignored those in tourist industries who cater to the folks who come to see wildlife that are alive. She has also ignored the will of the people who have voted several times over, not to allow aerial hunting. Gov. Palin seems to choose

And still, no Obama supporters here are willing to recognize and acknowledge the documented corruption that made him the nominee “by any means necessary.” It’s the O.J.’ing of the presidency, and you know it! And so did the late, great Shirley Tubbs Jones! Integrity trumps issues. Get over the Roe v. Wade crap. We could have ALL conservative SC Justices and it still won’t go away, no thanks to the lemmings who roll over and toe the party line but instead to we who truly pay close attention to the political goings-on and speak out to defend our rights—regardless of the party in power. I’ve fought for/defended RvW for thirty years. Let the Obama skanks take over the reigns. That is not my main issue, and as you vile people have said, if it concerns you so much, close your own legs. I’m pro-Choice—that goes two ways—and abortion should not be used as birth control. Those females who are Obama groupies are the type of women who derive their self-identity from the attention of men, especially when they misperceive the men as having power. That any Democrat could condone corruption with their vote tells me it really is time for the party to implode. It’s over! At least the Republicans don’t eat their own. If you think that all of Obama’s dirty little secrets won’t come to the fore and make him a lame duck—unable to accomplish anything—you have another think coming! I’m happy to be a newly minted nonpartisan. I own my vote, and no man or his groupies will dictate my issues to me—EVER!

I think the Democrates better wake up and realize Gov.Palin has done what Obama promises he can do……why invent the wheel…….I say let her have the chance to clean up America a little. Also she is perfect for John McCain and I believe she can back him up and take it forward…..I know I will feel alot more safe with McCain than Obama as president…..Obama talks the talk but he has not shown how he walks the walk…..Beware of this man….he and his wife clearly are very racist and I don’t believe they can set this aside to run a country as great as this……I have no problem with any color president but I do have a problem with uncontrolled anger and someone with issues like Obama and his wife…..It is not right and they need to be in therapy, not in charge of a great Country……………………….

How do you know what policy Sarah Palin supports? I don’t remember her mentioning Abstinence Only in any of her speeches. My point of view is: I talked to my child about sex and we talked about waiting until she got married. I explained to her that if she did decide to have sex to please come and discuss it with me so that she could take proper precautions, among other things. I also explained to her that the most precious gift you can give to someone is love. But, it is most special when that person is in love with you and wants to commit to you through marriage. (that was the short version of our conversation, by the way). She said herself that she wanted to wait until she got married before having sex. Unfortunetly, a 19 year old man told her he loved her and made alot of promises to her and then sexually assaulted her. That is what they call it when a man (19) has sex with a minor child (15). It is a felony in my state punishable by 2 to 10 years in prison. You have not walked in my shoes or Sarah Palin’s shoes so as far as I know you don’t have any experience behind you to discuss this. I know I did everything right. And, I truly believe Sarah Palin did her best with her daughter. And will continue to do so. And, yes, I do believe that teaching abstinence only is a good for SCHOOLS mainly because I think parents at home should be the ones discussing condoms, birth control, sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, etc. with their children. I love when the school has a Abstinence Only rally. The kids get excited and it helps them to realize they don’t have to be pressured by their peers to have sex. They rally together and feel like others understand how they feel. Bottom line sex education should come directly from the parents. Leave the academics for the teachers and parents you take care of the rest. And Lesa don’t judge other women, it is just wrong. Women should stick together and support each other. We have enough to battle in our everyday lives without people criticizing everything we do. It is my true belief that WHAT DOESN’T KILL YOU MAKES YOU STRONGER. You wouldn’t believe the crap I’ve been through
