Palin: Trailblazer or Bad Mother? You Decide!

Moms debate over whether Sarah Palin would make a good vice president.

trailblazer_cover_270.jpg

There is no bigger news this week than vice presidential hopeful Sarah Palin. Mothers everywhere are at odds over whether this mom of five is fit to be VP.

McCain met Sarah Palin for the first time in February at a National Governors Association meeting, where they chatted for 15 minutes. They met in person for a second time last week, when he invited her to his ranch in Sedona, Arizona. There, McCain offered her a spot on his ticket. Despite barely knowing her, McCain has called Sarah Palin his campaign "soul mate."

In Alaska, Governor Palin...

• Challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill.

• Used her veto and cut budgetary spending.

• Put a stop to the "bridge to nowhere" that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.

• She's also being investigated for the firing of a commissioner for public safety, Walter Moneghan. Mr. Moneghan claims that he was fired as commissioner because he refused to fire a state trooper who was divorcing Palin's sister. Plus, her opponents claim she simply doesn't have enough experience to be Commander in Chief, should something happen to John McCain.

The governor of Alaska is the mother of 5 children--Track, 18; Bristol, 17; Willow, 13; Piper, 7; and Trig, 4 months. As we all know by now, 17-year-old Bristol is pregnant, and 4-month-old Trig has Down syndrome. It has been reported that Palin went back to work just three days after giving birth to Trig.

The conversation got heated at momlogic yesterday, when we ran "The 'Juno' Effect Strikes Washington."

Mom Kate said: "Don't waste your vote on someone who will open up Alaska to drillers and take away women's reproductive rights. Just because she is a woman doesn't mean she is good for women."

But not everyone agrees with Kate...not by a long shot. Go to PAGE TWO to hear other moms' opinions.

Kelly Lerche, Talk about getting facts right, you need to check your sources. You have bought into the right wing brainwash and lies. My husband is also a veteran. He retired from the Coast Guard with 38 years of service encompassing both active and reserve duty which included Vietnam and a recall to service after 9/11. After Vietnam, he went back to school on the GI Bill. He also just retired after completing 33 years of service to the country as an employee of the Federal government. It is difficult for both of us to understand how anyone affiliated with the military can support those who consistently vote against measures which would promote the welfare of veterans. McCain has voted against the recent GI Bill proposal. He voted against expanded healthcare for returning veterans. He voted against the an amendment to the Bankruptcy bill that exempted deployed veterans. I don’t drink Kool Aid, but that is a nice snarky turn of phrase. As I was saying, the country cannot progress with this negative, uninformed illogical thinking which demonstrates a mean-spirited personal attack as a substitution for rational examination of facts. How Rovian! Those of you who fear taxes must be pretty well off. Obama plans to LOWER taxes for those who make under $250,000. Of course, McCain thinks the middle class is defined as people who make under 5 million a year. I guess I failed to mention that I am an Alaskan. My opinions are based on ground truth. As for Obama moving on to another position without finishing the last, isn’t Sarah doing the very same thing with even less tenure in her current position? I encourage you to go back and look up the records of both Palin and Obama as well as McCain before you vote. What kind of country do you want to leave to your children? Intelligence and education are relevant factors to consider in selecting our next leaders. Good heavens!!! We have already tried for the past eight years the other alternative. Don’t dismiss the education factor. Since when does a quality education become such a liability. This is exactly what I was trying to express in speaking about the hopes and aspirations of my father. Do we no longer respect intellect and those who want to make a difference in the lives of others? Do we not have hopes that each generation

I do not question whether she would be a good vice president. A woman can do anything she wants. I do believe that Republicans think American women are not smart enough to know that they are toying with us. They only picked her to get our votes. We supported Hillary because of what she stands for and the strenght and courage she has shown over the years. The Republicans feel that by putting a woman on the ticket, we will just forget about their bad policies and about all the lives that have been lost in the war; and that will continue to be lost if we elect a republican (again) to the White House. Also, I do not feel comfortable with a party where if anyone noticed in the convention… the crowd was not very diverse, it certainly does not reflect the America we are living in and the issues we are facing.

Sarah Palin is not the person you see,nor is McCain.First of all McCain said it himself, We need to take our republican hats off and put our american hats on.Excuse me, but shouldn’t your american hat be on at all times.Or is that to much to ask?And why wouldn’t a mother want to spend every minute with her baby who NO-ONE could ever replace in the babies eyes. Not even the father. There is no one like mom to a child-ever. She belongs to a church who protests at funerals of soilders killed in war- Give me a break. We try to teach our children to respect life, all life, you can’t say you are pro-life and then turn around and kill other people. Life is life no matter what.Shes a big flip-flopper also, going for the bridge to nowhere then against, then keeping the money for that bridge.Iknow I would be sick and so would you if McCain died of his cancer and she was going to be president, that would not be good for our country, not at all.McCain is a adulterer, did you see him checking out her behind while she was specking-ugg-thats sick.Where are his children? wHY ARE THEY NOT STANDING NEXT TO HIM? They probebly don’t think he should be president either because of his behavior, chasing a 24 yr. old down then leaving their disabled mother in the dirt after she waited for him all that time, talk about family values. The only values they have is for their own careers, it’s not about us as americans it’s just for republicans and white ones at that.I sure didn’t see people of color at their convention, okay I seen 3. That is not what America is about. They have probably fixed the election already like they did for Bush, don’t be fooled again, get people informed and don’t forget this is our country and we must protect it from them and their cronies.

I think she is a terrible choice. No experiences to run a country just a small town not even on the map.Palins words were that the war in Iraq is gods task. Palin doesnt believe that humans contribute to global warming. What planet did she come off of. She also has ties to big oil her inauguration was even sponsored by BP. She doesnt even support abortion in the case of rape.

Sarah Palin will ensure that there is no sex education in the schools. She’ll make not only abortion illegal by appointing supreme court judges that will reverse roe vs wade, but will also make contraceptives illegal. She’s only the VP? Yes, but only a heartbeat away from a 72 year old President who has had past bouts with cancer. Think about it, do we want Sarah Palin, wonderful soccer Mom as our new Commander in Chief? OMIGOD!

okay, I have read so many of these posts and I am going to weigh in here! SEX EDUCATION BEGINS AND ENDS AT HOME AND SHOULD NOT BE TAUGHT BY OUR SOCIALISTIC LIBERAL SCHOOLS THAT WOULD RATHER INDOCTRINATE RATHER THAN EDUCATE! My own children attend a public school and I will not sign permission forms for them to be taught something that I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR TEACHING THEM! and why the double standards????? why not ask the same questions to the (look closely, I am spelling this correctly) DEMOCRATS about WHO is RAISING their children….Michelle Obama quit her job to campaign, WHO IS WITH THE OBAMA GIRLS????? HMMMM, WHAT KIND OF MOTHER DOES THAT MAKE HER???? Biden’s wife passed away several years ago and he was left to RAISE ALONE 2 (I think) boys and not one time did anyone ever ask him HOW HE WAS GOING TO RAISE THEM BY HIMSELF… oh, wait, Palin is the epitomy of an ALL AMERICAN MOM WITH ALL AMERICAN TYPICAL KIDS WHO DO NOT LISTEN TO THEIR PARENTS ABOUT ABSTAINING FROM SEX! Doesn’t make her a bad mom it makes for normal teens and kids! and who the heck GAVE ANYONE THE RIGHT TO JUDGE AND CAST THE STONE? There is only one person that has that right and that is GOD! OH, and by the way she isn’t just for teaching creationism she is also for teaching evolution…get the facts straight before bashing her! I think Palin is exactly what this country needs! PALIN POWER!

As a mother of a 23 year old daughter and a 20 year old son, I would never do what this selfish woman did to all of her kids. She should have declined the job offer. For her to throw a national spotlight on this 17 year old child, in front of the other children too, is disgusting. Then the Republicans glorify it by parading Baby Daddy and acting like it is allll okay. Is this the message that should be given to the youth? How dare she bring 5 children into this world and still when they are very young and need their mother, take on a job like this. Selfish.

Claudia, then how dare all senators, governors, presidents bring their children into this type of lifestyle. Are you blind? Shall we have someone, male or female, then that doesnt have children? Has no wife or husband? No life? I have said ti once already, get over the whole children thing, Obama has two daughters, is he doing wrong by not putting them to bed and such? Or is this too a double standard because it is daddy instead of mommy? You all say how dare her drag her daughter into this. PLEASE!! She didnt hide the fact and she didnt announce it to the world that her daughter was pregnant. The whole pregnant daughter at age 17 thing is overrated, get over it already. It shows that she is a normal woman with normal issues!!

Christina, Why are you so angry? Typical Republican with double standards and twisting? Maybe if she had spent a little time teaching her daughter self respect, she wouldnt have sought attention elsewhere. I guess she just was too busy governing. Every situation in different, but I was just saying her choice at this particular time, I see as extremely selfish. She chose to have 5 children before choosing to accept a very demanding VP job. I vote for her kids to have their mom put them as first priority.

I’m a Bible Thumper so most of you might want to ignore my post but all this talk about school curriculums has me really upset. To begin with I believe in creation not evolutionism. Evolutionism is not a fact it is a theory. Why should my children be taught it is a fact anymore than a non believer be taught creationism is a fact? Schools should provide children with evidence regarding both points so our youth can make an educated decision. To add to my point there is proof that Jesus walked the earth and it is not just a story passed down. (ignorant Lesa this is aimed directly at you) By the way it was me that you find so scary. I’m the least of your problems! Let me point out that since we Americans have removed God from our schools murder and rape are at devastating levels. God cannot protect those who don’t allow him to. I’ve removed my children from public school because two of my daughters were attacked and subjected to inappropriate behavior. The schools nowdays act as though its no big deal. The principal actually told me it is the norm. As for what Sarah Palin has to bring to the table other than her stance on school curriculums she will be an amazing advocate for parents of special needs children. This impacts me directly. My oldest is special needs and services are vague. As parents we are forced to fight for everything he needs. Why should we have to fight for care in the United States of America? We should take care of our own! Do I believe in Palin’s role as a public figure instead of stay-at-home Mom, not sure. Maybe her husband is the care taker. There are families out there that the fathers have a very important roll in the home and do a better job than the mom. My husband happens to be in the Military and we see dads all the time that stay with their children while the moms go out and fight for their country. These dads are fabulous roll models for their children and bring great benefit to their homes. This is not even placing mention that the Palins are a big family and the children seem to take an active roll helping with their siblings. That is very important too. My daughter who is number

As a teacher of twenty years and a mother of two, 27 & 22 year old college graduates I have some major reasons not to back her. First of all I didn’t like the way her baby was passed around like he was a doll, he should of been in bed and cared for properly. If her daughter had received some sex education she may not be in the pregnant position she is in. She should be enjoying her senior year and not be a poster child for her mother’s VP campaign. I don’t know why she would want to re-locate her family from Alaska to Washington DC with a pregnant 16 year old daughter and a son with Down’s syndrome, they need her attention. She also does not have an adequate education to handle herself as a VP or future president. Life is very different in DC. Why isn’t her oldest son planning on going to college? I think her priorities are all in the wrong places. I have been a working parent but my first priority has always been my family. In her speech she was loud , at times obnoxious, sarcastic, and she did not get my vote.

I agree (Rebecca) Palin’s son should have been in bed, but this was an unusually important night and the family might have wanted him to be included. It might have been a one time thing, time will see. Hopefully I’m right. As for being passed around like a ragdoll I didn’t get that impression at all. In larger families it is not unusual for many family members to hold a baby. It is loving bonding experience. Isn’t it better than placing him in a stroller or infant seat all the time? As for Bristol in families there are children that are just harder to parent. My impression of Bristol is she is that child. Sometimes you can drill things into a childs head and regardless of them understanding its wrong they just do it, adults do that as well. That is what forgiveness is for.

I’m so glad I’m a democrat. It’s unbelievable that with all the more experienced women in politics, why her? Was she picked for her looks and her age? As Arsenio Hall said on the Jay Leno show, McCain has a knack for choosing fine women. Should his wife be worried? I would be. Even his campaign managers are saying, what was he thinking?

Actually CLAUDIA, im not republican or democrat. I dont single myslef out to one category or another. I choose to look at who the better person or persons are. As far as teaching her daughter self respect, how do you know she didnt?? Just because she acted like a normal teen ager and went and had sex?? Give me a break. Let me guess, old lady in her old ways?? So why arent you upset about Obama not paying attention to his kids?? Oh, i take it you are one of those people who says the mother needs to be home at all times. Its 2008 incase you missed it, most times both parents have to work to break even.

I have never heard so many idiotic people before in my life. Global warming is a joke its fake people. We are not more powerful than mother earth ie: Katrina….. If they (they meaning liberals) were right about global warming we all would have to wear sunblock with spf reading of 2000 by now….. your probably the same person that doesn’t want to drill in our own backyard in fear of wiping out the whooping crane. Yeah thats smart lets save a bird instead of create jobs. Wouldn’t you like to become less dependent on other countries like Iran or Russia. Sarah Palin is an inspiration to all women and little girls all over the world, let us not forget she earned this on her own. She didn’t ride the coat tails of her husband like one Hillary Clinton. All you women who are bashing her for taking on a job like this should be ashamed of yourselves and go pick up a Better Homes and Gardens from the 1950s. Make sure the house is clean and you freshen up before your husband gets home from work from your local factory. Oh thats right your a liberal we can’t build factories anymore the whooping crane is almost extinct.

I don’t understand how people can be so lazy not to just look at the record. Obama has spent his adult life in public service: making real change in the lives of the disenfranchised in Chicago. During the first eight months of his elected service he sponsored over 820 bills. He introduced 233 regarding healthcare reform, 125 on poverty & public assistance, 112 crime fighting bills, 97 economic bills, 60 human rights & anti-discrimination bills, 21 ethics reform bills, 15 gun control, 6 veterans affairs & many others. His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills & co-sponsored another 427. These inculded: Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 (became law) - Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation & Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, (became law) - The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, (became law) - The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate - The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill - Since he entered the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills & co-sponsored another 1096. Does that sound like someone with no legislative record? Learn to research, do not believe the smears & lies. Learn the facts. Comparision to S. Palin - Hmm? She was a mayor & a governor. Conveniently she doesn’t have a voting record.(because she’s a governor not a senator) Her issues: Health care must be market & business-driven. (Jan 2008) Encourage small business growth by reducing business taxes. (Nov 2006) Vetoed bill denying benefits to gays, as unconstitutional. (Aug 2008) Reduced general fund spending by $124 million. (Mar 2007) Pro-contraception, pro-woman, pro-life. (Aug 2006) Only exception for abortion is if mother’s life would end. (Jul 2006) She is a Lifetime NRA (National Rifle Association) Her Stances: Palin is anti-abortion, even in cases of rape & incest. She’s for teaching creationism in school & has admitted to not understanding global warming. Sarah Palin belongs to “Feminists for Life.” This organization believes pregnancy begins at conception, not at implantation—most doctors, except the most seriously anti-abortion ones, do not believe pregnancy begins at conception because most “products of conception” do not implant themselves in the uterine wall. (I used “products of conception” because “oocyte,” the correct term, is a word most people aren’t familiar with and “fetus,” the term anti-abortion people like to use for all stages of pregnancy, isn’t correct at the point in time we’re discussing.) Feminists for Life also calls birth control pills “abortifacient

Palin… Please. I am the mother of a child with a mild disability, yet she is on the honor role. That didn’t happen by accident. I have worked hard with my daughter, every day for the past 7 years. Now a child with down syndrome needs his mother above anyone else. I don’t care how experienced a nanny or nurse she gets. I worked throughout the whole time. But I wasn’t V.P. I devoted my life as a teacher and mother so I could help my daughter. It would be great to have a female in the White House, but come on now! How can she sacrifice the personal raising of her own children, for power? No one said she can’t work or be a VP. But she needs to stop being such a selfish person. There are other jobs that would leave her more time to be with her children. But she seems to prefer to sacrifice her family rather than sacrifice her dreams and goals. She is still young. She could wait until her children are older and more independent. She made a terrible, selfish decision. Electing her and the geriatric patient to those offices would be a big mistake. Because that’s what they’re going to do, make a whole lot of big mistakes that we, as a nation, cannot afford. And I wish she would stop talking religion, because she certainly doesn’t seem to have any. She’s a hypocrite. The whole thing disgusts me. Democrat or Republican, the decision is clear. That team of McCain and Palin just won’t work!

I cannot believe that Sarah Palin is the best the Republican Party can offer. I thought she gave a great speech, but parading a 4 month old night after night. Give me a break!! I am not going to vote for her just because she is a woman. She lacks the qualifications. If you think she has more experience than Obama and Biden, think again. She is a heartbeat away from the Presidency and frankly I don’t want her to be my President.

Wow Christina. This is a site for moms and I just gave my personal viewpoint. Why are you only picking on me! Looks like most of the people commenting have the same feeling and your not lashing out at them! We at least have one thing in common. I am registered independent and also choose the person or in this case the whole ticket. If you looked at the subject of this matter, Obama is not even mentioned as the subject. If you want to start a new subject, maybe we can meet there as well! The pregnant child has been out of school for the last several months due to “mono”, so they did lie to the school district already and did hide it. She hid her pregnancy the first apperance by holding the baby lengthwise. They only came out with it after rumors that Trig was the teenagers baby. I quit a full time job to stay home to raise my children and we wouldnt trade it for anything. I always maintained a part time job when they were in school, but was home when they were home and knew where they were. We always felt that it was such a short time in our lives that they would be kids and so we made the most of it. You reap the rewards with just giving your kids time. I am actually sorry I hit such a nerve with you. I dont know your story and the things you have had to face. I was just commenting on the subject. You say trailblazer, I say bad selfish mother in this case. VOTE FOR PALINS KIDS EVERYONE!! And pray for the son going to Iraq.

I think alot of people don’t like her because she is a Christian! What about tolerance? Oh, I forgot, that is only for gays and other religions. Christians believe that no one is perfect except Jesus, and we all need forgiveness. I like it that she is pro-life. Her life certainly would have been alot easier if she would have aborted her child that has Down’s syndrome and encouraged her teenager to have an abortion. But she has values and believes killing an unborn child is wrong. Period. Our country was formed on Judeo-Christian values which is what some people call “narrow minded” now. May God help our country.
