Palin: Trailblazer or Bad Mother? You Decide!

Moms debate over whether Sarah Palin would make a good vice president.

trailblazer_cover_270.jpg

There is no bigger news this week than vice presidential hopeful Sarah Palin. Mothers everywhere are at odds over whether this mom of five is fit to be VP.

McCain met Sarah Palin for the first time in February at a National Governors Association meeting, where they chatted for 15 minutes. They met in person for a second time last week, when he invited her to his ranch in Sedona, Arizona. There, McCain offered her a spot on his ticket. Despite barely knowing her, McCain has called Sarah Palin his campaign "soul mate."

In Alaska, Governor Palin...

• Challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill.

• Used her veto and cut budgetary spending.

• Put a stop to the "bridge to nowhere" that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.

• She's also being investigated for the firing of a commissioner for public safety, Walter Moneghan. Mr. Moneghan claims that he was fired as commissioner because he refused to fire a state trooper who was divorcing Palin's sister. Plus, her opponents claim she simply doesn't have enough experience to be Commander in Chief, should something happen to John McCain.

The governor of Alaska is the mother of 5 children--Track, 18; Bristol, 17; Willow, 13; Piper, 7; and Trig, 4 months. As we all know by now, 17-year-old Bristol is pregnant, and 4-month-old Trig has Down syndrome. It has been reported that Palin went back to work just three days after giving birth to Trig.

The conversation got heated at momlogic yesterday, when we ran "The 'Juno' Effect Strikes Washington."

Mom Kate said: "Don't waste your vote on someone who will open up Alaska to drillers and take away women's reproductive rights. Just because she is a woman doesn't mean she is good for women."

But not everyone agrees with Kate...not by a long shot. Go to PAGE TWO to hear other moms' opinions.

Political idealogy aside, addressing only the question, “Trailblazer or Bad Mother”. Of course she is a Trailblazer. “Bad” mother may be a bit harsh, but a large factor would be how much her husband is willing to be the nuturing “Mr. Mom”. I admit not knowing a lot about Todd Paylin, but from what I’ve read about him (champion iron dog snowmobiler, oil field production engineer)- usually anyone that is very committed to a sport has to put an extrordinary amount of time and effort into that. I might be generalizing based on other people I have known with this extreme masculine personality, but I don’t really see him spending a lot of home time nuturing his Downs Syndrome infant son and being there for “motherly advice” for his daughters. I tend not to understand the logic of people who have children just to be raised by nannies, and I question the judgement of a person that would except a job like President or Vice President -pretty much a 24-7 job, when you have an infant. Another thing I worry about is that Both John McCain and Sarah Palin have sons deployed to Iraq. While I commend them both for not using their politial connections for getting easier assignments for their sons, I wonder if they are also putting their sons (and other men in their units) for greater risk of terrorist attacks because of the political situations of their parents. Expanding on the point, if anything would happen to one of their sons while in Iraq, would their grief cause them to react in a reactionary manner and make decisions that they might not have made under normal circumstances?

I was on the fence about my vote. I am voting for McCain/Palin after hearing Palins speech. I really don’t understand why having children should stop her from working. This is not the 60’s and most women work. White house or grocery store checker, women work and fathers & family help with the kids. Has anyone questioned the fact that Obama and his wife both have been working while raising their kids?

As a working African American ,single mother and grandmother of a special needs child born to my daughter when she was just 17 years old I have always told my children that you only get one chance to make a first impression and frankly I was not impressed by Sarah Palin. The Republican party wants voters to think because she is a working mother and has had some challenges in her life that she will automatically win the support of Hillary Clinton’s “sisterhood of the traveling pant suits” it will take more than her ability to deliver a punch line to win us over if it wasn’t so blatently obvious that John McCain is trying to distance himself feom the Republican Party I say if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck guess what, I am also finding it almost impossible to take someone seriously when they look like Tina Fey and sound like Megan Mullally.

Why not Sara Palin? Life is not perfect ,why do we as Americans expect our government officials to be if we are not. I truely believe we should look at the people and not what party they belong to,be open minded. Why not a women? What are we so sared of, oh my God she may do a better job than a man.

Do American’s really believe that Sarah is ready to be commander and chief? We must ask ourselves that question, especially with John Mccain’s health concerns and age. I think John Mccain had better choices that he could have elected, but he was so concerned about his campaign. He says he is putting country first. Well his lack of judgement in picking Sarah Palin, a women who just recently received her PASSPORT concerns me. He couldn’t have possibly asked himself if she was truly ready to be commander if chief. The answer to that question is clearly no, regardless of who you wish to vote for. Anyone who believes a person who has just received his/her passport is qualified to handle foreign affairs, is clearly delusional. I had the same concern when Obama considered Gov. Tim Kaine of VA. My feeling is not personal, this is business. In a time when our country is in a crisis, we need to ensure that the Presidential and VP nominees are strong. Make sure you are voting for the total package. I have heard many commentators say. Joe and Sarah are just running for VP… NO, they are running for PRESIDENT. Sarah is not ready to run this country at this time. I would like to see her run when she has had more experience.

People, get off the children and back to the facts, that is if you can distinguish the truth from the lies? Everyone has their own opinion right or wrong. When I learned of a disease I had the only way to really learn how to handle it was by doing my own research as many of the doctors were afraid to say I don’t know and tried learning on me at my expense. Same here; learn the truth as best can be done and vote for whomever you researched will try to do the best. Then all we can do is hope, as we watch what decisions get made for us by those more wealthy and powerful than ourselves. P.S. We do not do women justice if just because she is a woman Palin, Hillary or whomever, we vote for them!

I am the mother of an autistic young lady, and I have 2 other kids. At the age of 12 my autistic girl came down with lupus. I have been through it all. Believe me,it is a constant touch and go and harsh medical treatment. I think Palin is a greedy opportunist, being gorvernor is one thing, and I proud that she was able to accomplish that, however, being Vice president of the most powerful country in the world is a very demamding job. She became gorvenor before her son was born. I think both she and her husband should put the baby first.

Only those who don´t understand science use the tired old argument that evolution is “only” a theory. Get some education and read something other than a book of mythology. Palin is a bad choice for all Americans. I sincerely hope she does not win the vice presidency. A smug ignorant person is more dangerous than a plain ignorant person. This woman is waiting for the rapture and therefore thinks that conservation is just a silly little fad since the world is going to end anyway. A person who believes that the earth is only 7000 years old despite the pesky facts has no place in any position of responsibility other than his or her culty church. I hope her son is safe once he is deployed to a war zone. Someon like Palin would probably tout his death to further her agenda.

I am more and more ashamed of the way women are not applauding the achievement of Sarah Palin on the VP ticket-to say nothing of her history of achievements as a woman in a man’s world-hello, Alaska? Not exactly Sex in the City. Let’s get honest with outselves—if you disagree with her ideology, say that. Say you can’t vote for her point of view. Great. Then cheer for a woman who is paving the way for your daughter to make it farther in this world. But let’s not look for sludge to toss at this woman-what’s next? She has an alien lover? She planned 9/11? No, I don’t agree with all she believes in-but I am so proud of her, and you should be too. Walk away from your politics for just a moment, and savor this. It’s good for our daughters.

It is not like she left Trig with strangers days after he was born. He was at home with his father. My friend went back to work soon after she had her last baby, and yes she was breastfeeding. The baby would not take a bottle. She would go to work and come home on her brakes to breastfeed her baby. He husband is a stay at home daddue to a disability. They also have an autistic child. I suppose you would think that she is a bad mom as well. As for the pregnant 17 year old. If you think that your teen does everything you tell them to do. Keep dreaming. If you think that teens that take a sex ed class don’t end up pregnant. Wake Up! I am amazed at how everyone has John McCain in his death bed. I bet he looked much worse than he does now when he was a prisoner in a POW camp and he survived that. I am sure that he can survive the next 4 years. As to how much experiance Palin has. I think we should be asking how much experiance Obama has. Whether you were for or against the war The Surge that John McCain suggested under much pressure not to do it was a success. The other option was to surrender. I don’t know about you but I think that we should at least try to win the war since we are already there. McCain has proven that he can be commander in chief of our military. Neither Obama or Palin are ready to be commander and chief but only one of those are running for President. And both McCain and Palin will have children in Iraq. Palin will have time to learn from McCain and she was also in charge of the National Guard in Alaska. Obama as president will not have time to learn from others our troops will pay the price for his inexperiance. As for all of you anti-war people that are going to vote for Obama. Do you realize that he is for sending troops into Afganastan? So if you are only voting because you think Obama won’t send troops to war you might as well not vote. Just one more thought about Palin. She has an 80% approval rating in Alaska. This is the best ever recorded. I would say

I seem to be in the minority here but I think that she is a great choice. She has done a lot for Alaska and Wasilla people state that she left Wasilla in debt but you really need to look at the years after she has left. Like in every siutation immediate responses are never accurate. She is a hard working mother of 5 with a grandchild on the way. I think that she is the best choice Mr. Mccain could have picked and everyone should only subject her to the questions you are willing to ask all the others running. Ask about her politics and beliefs even if she wants Bibles in schools I feel like every option should be given to our children if evolution can be taught so can the story of creation. Our children should be able to be taught both and then decide. Anyways enough rambling I will vote for Mrs. Palin on merrit not .’cause she is a woman.

Did anyone hear of the quote, “We will be done in by someone from within?” That is going to be Obama if he is elected! Very scary!!!!! And I certainly do not want a president who is not patriotic.

Bruce mom, you don’t have a clue on her faith views. They are similar to mine. The authentic Bible has more proof (artifacts, scrolls, historic truths…) than an educated guess of a scientist that lived to refute his ‘claims’ on Evolution just before he died. Some people prefer believing lies vs. truth. It’s the easy way, but “every knee whall bow and tongue confess Jesus Christ is Lord” Life on earth is a spec of sand compared to all eternity.

This is ridiculous! My usual policy is never talk religion or politics but I allowed myself to get sucked in. Nothing that is said here will or should change anyone’s mind. If you can find the truth from the lies make up your own mind and stop insulting each other or attempting to persuade, it’s futile!

To Amber, or anyone else who is saying that they saw very few black faces at the RNC…..think about it. Could many, MANY people of color be for Obama because he is African-American!? The problem here is that a high percentage of African- Americans are MUCH more racist than whites! A few of my black coworkers announced months ago, that they would vote for the black candidate, no matter his ideas or policies. Btw, I am an Independent and will vote for the person that most closely resembles my views, no matter what color they should happen to be.

Oh yea, she is ready for A Strip Club, not VP. She enjoys one thing though, She has 5 kids so we know what she likes. Wonder how many kids she would have had if she was Bill’s VP.

The trooper that Palin worked to have fired tasered his own 10-year-old son. Good on her for pushing for his removal! As far as her needing to be home with her kids, her husband is doing that. Isn’t that something for feminists to celebrate? Or they only want liberal women to have careers?

She is an amazing woman. Women everywhere are having children and working. Her teenage daughter being pregnant has absolutely nothing to do with her parenting or morals. We can tell our teens all we want to abstain from sex and anyone who isn’t delusional will realize a good majority of teens are having sex. What means a lot to me is that daughter chose to have the child with the support of her family. It appears that political bias is getting in the way of clear vision. It is clear Sarah is strong, has values and stands by them. That is what counts. I would feel secure having her 2nd in line in the white house. She is going to stand her ground and get things done just as she did in Alaska. As for drilling….its time we all wake up and realize this is what needs to be done…unless of course we want to be dependent upon foreign oil forever.

I was planning on voting for McCain…that was until he picked Palin. Now, not only am I voting for Obama, I am donating money and my time to his campaign. Her nomination was an insult to women. There are many more qualified women in the Republican party. Palin was mayor of a town of less than 8,000 people and a governor of a state of less than 600,000 people. The mayor of my CITY governs four times more people than the whole state of Alaska and I don’t even think he is qualified to be a VP candidate. As a woman, I found it insulting to have the Republican Party say she has the “executive experience” to be VP of the United States of American. Is this country trying to elect “Mother of the Year” or a qualified VP?
