Palin: Trailblazer or Bad Mother? You Decide!

Moms debate over whether Sarah Palin would make a good vice president.

trailblazer_cover_270.jpg

There is no bigger news this week than vice presidential hopeful Sarah Palin. Mothers everywhere are at odds over whether this mom of five is fit to be VP.

McCain met Sarah Palin for the first time in February at a National Governors Association meeting, where they chatted for 15 minutes. They met in person for a second time last week, when he invited her to his ranch in Sedona, Arizona. There, McCain offered her a spot on his ticket. Despite barely knowing her, McCain has called Sarah Palin his campaign "soul mate."

In Alaska, Governor Palin...

• Challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill.

• Used her veto and cut budgetary spending.

• Put a stop to the "bridge to nowhere" that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.

• She's also being investigated for the firing of a commissioner for public safety, Walter Moneghan. Mr. Moneghan claims that he was fired as commissioner because he refused to fire a state trooper who was divorcing Palin's sister. Plus, her opponents claim she simply doesn't have enough experience to be Commander in Chief, should something happen to John McCain.

The governor of Alaska is the mother of 5 children--Track, 18; Bristol, 17; Willow, 13; Piper, 7; and Trig, 4 months. As we all know by now, 17-year-old Bristol is pregnant, and 4-month-old Trig has Down syndrome. It has been reported that Palin went back to work just three days after giving birth to Trig.

The conversation got heated at momlogic yesterday, when we ran "The 'Juno' Effect Strikes Washington."

Mom Kate said: "Don't waste your vote on someone who will open up Alaska to drillers and take away women's reproductive rights. Just because she is a woman doesn't mean she is good for women."

But not everyone agrees with Kate...not by a long shot. Go to PAGE TWO to hear other moms' opinions.

Family values Family values Family Values Family Values Family Values!! Wasnt that crammed down our throats last election? Now its tossed aside and we are told not to question how this particular woman can handle it?? Then a 9/11 “tribute” (propaganda) at the Republic Convention? That was an attempt to bring the fear factor back to the American people. Not the time and not the place.

How is a person ready for the VP slot if they’re not ready to be interviewed? If she’s not ready to campaign from day one, how is she ready to lead from day one?

Being a mother qualifies you for nothing more than being a mother, Not for the most important position in the world. I’m a Mom, but in no way do I think I could handle the Vice-presidency. I have ‘moxie,’ and I can tear it up with the best of them, but that doesn’t qualify me. I have three higher education degrees (more than Gov. Palin) but that doesn’t qualify me for it either. I want a president I can look up to… I want a president I can trust… I want a president who is smarter than I am, more educated than I am, has been to places I haven’t been, and knows how to speak with people all over the world. From the moment of her speech at the convention, I knew she was not trustworthy. She came out raging at Senator Obama, and showed him no repect. This is not what we expect from our leaders; we want them to model for us how to behave in this new global world. This does not show our children a good example in how you deal with others. I was not impressed. She is no Senator Hillary Clinton, who has fought for years for women’s rights, children’s benefits, and the rights of others. Mrs. Clinton has proved herself over years of work in the world. Do not be fooled. Governor Palin has a long way to go to understand how this world works. I was offended by her trashing of Community Organizers. These are people who work for the needy and the poor. I have seen the work they do. It was them to helped organize people to help with Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. I haven’t heard Gov. Palin say one word about helping poor people, not one word about education, not one word about equal pay for working women. This is not good for women, not good for families, and not good for the USA. Please ladies, before you jump into the cheering section, take some time, and explore the issues. Listen, and read, and then think clearly. Just because she’s got the same biology as we do doesn’t mean she has your best interest at heart. This isn’t a girls’ club where we elect the ‘neatest’ girl to be president. Our country is in deep trouble, and if we don’t elect the smartest person, we’ll remain in

I don’t think she’s a good choice for v.p. because of her positions and lack of knowledge on the issues. As a mother, it is unbelievable to me that a woman, knowing that she’s leaking amnionic fluid, would think it more important to give a speech than to go to the hospital. Even worse, she boards a plane and flies back to Alaska before seeking medical treatment. The fact that she is so ambitious as to put her career over her unborn child frightens me. This is not the type of person want in the White House.

I wish the poll had this option: There are plenty of moms who’d make a great VP, but Palin is a right-wing creationist we-must-birth-rapist’s-babies nutjob and so she is RIGHT out of consideration.

Noel I understand what your saying about not voting just because of gender but let’s be honest.. How many people are going to vote for Obama simply because of his race? There have been many people who have openly admitted that I am voting for him because I’m black and so is he..Obama hasn’t proven that he can run a country he can’t even make a decision on tough issues in the senate I am certain that you are aware of his “present” votes come on now..if he is all about change how the hell does he know what the hell he wants to change he can’t even pick yes or no

Amanda, I’m glad you commented.. First of all, I can’t speak for everyone, but I can speak for myself. I will not vote for a woman because she’s a woman. People who want to vote because of gender or ethnic identity have that right. But I prefer to vote on issues. In fact, I’d vote for the best candidate for my country’s future, whether they were man, woman, black, white or purple. Obama can’t run a country? Who are you listening to? Obama has more legislative experience than ABraham Lincoln. Can’t make tough decisions in Senate? He passed a law with republican Senator Dick Lugar to prevent undocumented nuclear weapons from getting in the hands of terrorists. He passed tough ethics legislation, and tried to pass a new G.I. Bill to give veterans a better life when they get home from the war. This bill has been denied by John McCain. Obama can’t make tough decisions? In Illinois he passed legislation on child care, health care and education. These are issues that should be important to women. John McCain wanted to shut down the national office of Education. If you really want to compare resumes, Herea are some differences: Sarah Palin went to 5 colleges in 6 years, and got a bachelor’s degree in journalism. She came in second in a beauty contest… She worked as sports reporter for an Anchorage television station. She was on city council, and then elected mayor in her town Wasilla (population 6,000). She was elected governor of Alaska, (population 606,000). Does that sound like preparation for leadership in the world as it is now? Obama graduated with a doctorate degree from Harvard in 1991; worked as a civil rights lawyer, and president of Harvard Law Review. (He is an expert on the Constitution of the USA). He taught law, served on various boards. Served the people of Illinois as state senator from 1996; elected to US senate in 2004. Why did he vote present? Glad you asked. I’m from Illinois; in the Illinois legislature, that is the custom.. to vote ‘present’ while you wait for a bill to become more refined. Voting ‘present’ rarely occurs in the national senate. Obama has been present for more votes in the US Senate than has John McCain. If McCain thinks that we should be “Country First” then he should keep his committment to the people of Arizona

I love McCain—-I’m a retiree from the Air Force & love what he stands for military wise. I don’t like Palin—-she will push women back at least a hundred years. She’ll take away Rights to Choice, and she wants no part of sex education or the use of condoms—-she only respects abstinence. Perhaps if her daughter knew about sex through sex education & knew what condoms were—perhaps she wouldn’t be pregnanat at this point in time. If McCain has more heart problems, she would be the President & that would be very bad. I’m not thrilled with Obama—-but he has a well-informed VP who will help him out & could take over the Presidency if needed.

I think this poll is ridiculous. It is worded so poorly. “No way - she needs to be with her kids. Maybe - with a few full-time nannies! Yes - she’s had 5 kids, she can do anything.” What happened to these options - ones that highlight whether or not we think she is QUALIFIED: No way - She isn’t experienced Maybe - She has some experience Yes - She has limited experience, but at least it is good experience and she shows promise. Or, if you want to be sexist and concentrate on the fact that she is a parent. At least, don’t leave out the fact that her HUSBAND has already become a Stay-at-Home-Dad. Childcare is taken care of - they don’t need “a few full-time nannies” or daycare. And, even if they did - that’s how many, if not most, American families manage in this day and age! Honestly, for so-called “progressives” and women to be ridiculing her for being a mother and VP - what a Hypocrisy. How dare you. When has a man EVER been asked about that? Look at the Obamas even. They BOTH work and are campaigning. Not only has he not been asked about it, but neither has she!! The double standard is maddening.

Obama spend’s his minimal time in the Senate pushing the present button & heading back out to shoot for a bigger job. There is 2 thing’s though he did vote for 1> infantside: allowing babies that survive abortion’s (late term) to be put in a filthy laundry room alone, without medical treatment, to die a slow inhuman death ( I call that murder). 2> Teaching sex education to children starting in KINDERGARDERN! Exposing young children to sexual information is taking away their right to their innocence. It’s bad enough that our children & teen’s are sexualized as never been seen before. Now you get politician’s voting for & looking to legislate when your child is told about & exposed to sexual information. This is a an abomination. They started with taking God out of school’s, (which our Country was founded on)& 1/2 the kid’s are now trouble maker’s or just completely disrespectful to any authority, teacher’s etc. Now Obama would support teaching sex to Kindergardener’s. God forbid he get’s into office, I will have no choice but to home school my children. Remember people big government mean’s less individual right’s & freedom. You think it can’t happen until you wake up & realize all the individual freedom’s that have already been taken away from the people.

KELLY-Individual freedom? Like a womans right to choose? I have a feeling you dont support that individual freedom. And wow. You really should read up the facts. Looks like you fell for the gutter campaigning of McCain/Palin. It is a fact that his commercial today is a lie. The bill he signed was helping to give control to the parents and communities so sex education wouldnt be state mandated, which other states already practiced. It was meant to protect children from predators. Who in there right mind would criticize that!!! That shows what McCain has to stoop to. This is absolutely sickening. Now he is using vile innuendo and without even educating yourself on the matter you are trying to spread more ugly ugly lies.

Renee… individual freedom? A child’s right to life? I have a feeling you don’t consider a child an individual? If a women wants the right to choose..CHOOSE TO USE BIRTHCONTROL OR ABSTINENCE!! I am in the health care field and I have seen WAY too many women use abortion as BIRTHCONTROL.It’s disgusting!!

Amanda- Believe me, I am definitly not pro-abortion. I was just making a point. I also had no idea that so many women are using abortion as birth control. Not good at all. I was shocked to find out my daughter has to pay $45 for one month of birth control. In my day it was $5 a month. Do the patients you see have access to cheap birth control? Prescriptions and coverage has skyrocketing since last year. Lets hope the candidates address that!

Sarah Palin seems to be a likable person. I don’t have a problem with her being a working mom, or with any of the issues that surround her family. What I do have problems with is her narrow viewpoint, lack of experience, and unwavering belief that she is right because Jesus is on her side. Look where that got us last time. Folks, wake up and see what’s happening here. People are being charmed by an image of this moose-hunting mom from Alaska and do not see the truth: she is not a fit choice for VP—she’s a lure for voters who don’t want to think too deeply about where our country, and our world, is headed.

On TV a few months ago, McCain was asked who his running mate would be, and his answer was that who the VP would be is totally unimportant. He stated that the VP’s sole responsibility was to inquire about the President’s health. He implied it did not matter in the least who was chosen as VP. The fact that he met her once for 15 minutes, then the second time at his ranch when he invited her to run with him. If THIS is how a President chooses his potential replacement, should the unforeseen happen, I shudder to think about the rest of his decisions! Like Bush, Palin took a city of 7000, from a balanced budget to being in the hole. The U.S. was totally out of debt when Bush took office, and now look at us. Wasilla, AK, was totally out of debt before Palin took office. Now, they’re thousands of dollars in debt. I’ve heard a lot of Republicans say they hate McCain, and care even less for Palin. Unfortunately, due to mental blindness, they are STILL going to vote Republican! How brainwashed can you be?!?!?

From Sex Education to “lipstick on a pig”, McCain has twisted the truth in order to sling mud at Obama. Do we really think McCain will suddenly tell us the truth if he is voted into office? Palin spins her points in much the same way. She stole money from the US Govt to build the $48mil Road to Nowhere instead of building the Bridge to Nowhere. There needs to be more accountability for the money issued to the states. I don’t believe Palin has the experience or the scruples to even be a decent VP, let alone a potential President.

OK guys, lets get real…. Don’t believe all the crap the media feeds you… do you really think she would risk her career getting her ex-brother in law fired as a state trooper…. ever think that maybe he was abusing his power as a trooper during the divorce… ??? As far as her daughter being pregnat??? once again get real… I know christian and non-christian families with good values, that have stay at home mom family dynamics, that teach sex-education, along with abstinence, they watch over every moment on the internet, they know where their kids are at all times, they weed out the bad seeds from being influences… they protect their cubs at all costs and guess what THEY HAD A TEENAGE DAUGHTER GET PREGNANT… it can happen to anyone, any family, any race, any social class, any religious affiliation… so I DO NOT JUDGE HER ON THIS…. As far as creationism vs. SCIENCE… I am a SCIENCE MAJOR, but once again I am realistic.. she never banned science, she did advocate BOTH SIDES… now once again, lets be reasonable AMERICA…. I’m not against religion in any way… I believe religion should be taught just as history is… give the history of each religion, however if you promote one religion you should promote all, unfortunatly, christians have been abused over the last decade… you can carry the muslim bible, but not the HOLY bible… so if anything, LETS GET REAL, either allow RELIGION, ALL RELIGION in school, or allow none… and there is nothing wrong with additing a broad overview of “RELIGION” to the curriculum… just not SCIENCE and CREATIONISM only……… science is either fact or theory… religion is mostly theory…… WE HAVE TO COME TOGETHER AS A NATION AND START THINKING LIKE REASONABLE PEOPLE INSTEAD OF FAR LEFT NUT JOBS, AND RIGHT WING WACHO’S… meet in the middle I do think the republican party has Okayed her speaking of GOD in her life, do I think she believes in GOD and practices christianity, YES, however I do think it is a political tactic to bring in the evangelical bunch…. LEAVE McCain out of it, and let the VP bring them on board Same with the anti-abortion issue, come on people, LETS GET REAL, how many presidents have been pro-life and policy hasn’t changed……. Do I think there needs to be stricter guidelines on abortion, YES!!! ABSOLUTLY… but you

Where are all of those right wing “family values”?? Hello women, just because someone is a woman does not mean we , as women, should just “get behind her”. Besides her serious lack of experience, why would any mom want to support another woman who has five kids, one who is only 4 MONTHS OLD, and thinks it is okay to run for office. Who is going to raise this kid? Right wingers, get your values straight! This is one liberal who says ” I want a woman with experience, substance, values, and who ,if she is a mom takes that role seriously!!!”

Palin is a joke but she’s definitely not funny. McCain will probably not live out his term if he is elected and the thought of having this crazy woman running the country is enough to strike terror in all our hearts. She is a cold bitch that plays under the disguise of a born again Christian. Any woman who takes her little girl out to teach her to kill animals for fun (and don’t even TRY to tell me she does it to feed her family!) is not a fit mother nor a fit person to lead the country. Another thing, if she was a good mother she would be home with her children instead of traipsing all over the country doing photo-ops, especially with a tiny special needs baby at home. It is very obvious that the woman never met a camera she didn’t like. It is also obvious that she is a “control freak” as she seems to want to dictate to everyone how she expects them to live - even in their bedrooms. It’s also too bad she opposes six education - it looks as though her daughter might have greatly benefitted from it.
