Palin: Trailblazer or Bad Mother? You Decide!

Moms debate over whether Sarah Palin would make a good vice president.

trailblazer_cover_270.jpg

There is no bigger news this week than vice presidential hopeful Sarah Palin. Mothers everywhere are at odds over whether this mom of five is fit to be VP.

McCain met Sarah Palin for the first time in February at a National Governors Association meeting, where they chatted for 15 minutes. They met in person for a second time last week, when he invited her to his ranch in Sedona, Arizona. There, McCain offered her a spot on his ticket. Despite barely knowing her, McCain has called Sarah Palin his campaign "soul mate."

In Alaska, Governor Palin...

• Challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill.

• Used her veto and cut budgetary spending.

• Put a stop to the "bridge to nowhere" that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.

• She's also being investigated for the firing of a commissioner for public safety, Walter Moneghan. Mr. Moneghan claims that he was fired as commissioner because he refused to fire a state trooper who was divorcing Palin's sister. Plus, her opponents claim she simply doesn't have enough experience to be Commander in Chief, should something happen to John McCain.

The governor of Alaska is the mother of 5 children--Track, 18; Bristol, 17; Willow, 13; Piper, 7; and Trig, 4 months. As we all know by now, 17-year-old Bristol is pregnant, and 4-month-old Trig has Down syndrome. It has been reported that Palin went back to work just three days after giving birth to Trig.

The conversation got heated at momlogic yesterday, when we ran "The 'Juno' Effect Strikes Washington."

Mom Kate said: "Don't waste your vote on someone who will open up Alaska to drillers and take away women's reproductive rights. Just because she is a woman doesn't mean she is good for women."

But not everyone agrees with Kate...not by a long shot. Go to PAGE TWO to hear other moms' opinions.

I love how people keep saying she needs to be at home with her kids, she needs to spend time with her pregnant daughter. HELLO! Is it not the view of liberal democrats that mothers do not have to stay home with their children? Mothers can run companys, mothers can work on Wall Street, can be lawyers, and doctors. All those careers take enormous amounts of time away from their children. So are all those moms wrong too? Your either for Stay at Home moms, or your for Working Moms. You can’t be against her working, but for the millions of other moms doing their thing outside of the home. I am fortunate enough to be able to stay home with my children. I do not think that should play ANY part in the decision come this Fall. As far as teaching Abstinence, just because it does not work every time, does not mean you should abandon the idea. Last time I checked, condoms were only 80% effective. YES? So should be abandon that too, since 20% of those girls will be pregnant. Buy a clue people.

Sarah Palin is a wonderful pick for VP. I think she is a breath of fresh air. Her whole family is beautiful and average like most Americans. My vote is for McCain/ Palin.

Uhhh… average family? You might want to look into that a little bit. I hope everyone is looking for something better than “average” or “a breath of fresh air”. She has the potential of being the President… with hardly any outside Alaska experience! Please put alot more thought into it.

Have you noticed that kids are not kids anymore? Babies having babies and the detention centers are full of kids. We as teens did not hear of this (by that I mean in my generation I’m close to 40). I mean once in a while a girl disappeared from school for a while then came back different. I have a teen daughter who has informed me that 5 of her classmates are having babies. I truely feel for their parents. But I also believe that I came from a generation of SAHM’s or at least when mothers were moms first career second. In the world today, to many are letting the TV, video games or babysitters raise the children. I am not putting down all babysitters or nannies or even TV and video games. But if the mothers are to busy to pay attention to what goes into our children who will? Not all nannies are created equal! No one will love your child like you I don’t care who they are. It is our responsiblity to raise our kids perios! Being in polotics and being a mother is hard enough, being VP and a mother should be impossible. If we as mothers (fathers too) would devote more time and energy into our children just maybe we could turn this crazy cycle. How can we teach our daughters how to be good mothers if we aren’t there? How can we teach our sons to love and provide for their families if we are always somewhere else? Only thru devotion and time can they truely understand how a family should be, not by being an absentee parent. I understand their are times when we have to be away. But how much is to much and where should the line be drawn? If Palin is gonna be a good mother then she must be a mother first. Do we need a VP who will put our government second? Then do we need a VP who is a not a good mother? I do not see how she can be both. If here career comes first then her nanny is really the mommy and her kids will know they did not come first in her life. It is truely her decision on what she wants to do in her life. I am not against having a woman in the white house but in

I am ASTONISHED that anyone got past her offensively stupid analogy at the opening of the RNC!!! Are we just to captivated to have not realized?? FACT: A breeding female dog is the grammatic definition of “Bitch”; FACT: Pitbulls are notorious for attacking without provocation, have been bred for blood sport fighting, and an unpredictable hyper aggressive nature. So….Governor Sara Palin, in her OWN WORDS, prides herself on being 1) a “Bitch”; the Actual definition of a breeding female DOG. 2)unpredictably hyper aggressive. 3) and willing and prone to attacking without provocation or rationale…All While Wearing Lipstick???? In her Sarcastic, Ill-conceived attempt at humor used to demonstrate her “strengths and voraciousness” as a REGULAR HOCKEY MOM, She offended EVERY sports mom in the country. Grrreat. I certainly hope this monumentally IGNORANT comparison didnt go unnoticed. The only thing that ill conceived proclamation did was seal it that not only is she NOT suited to be our VP, but I hope she stays away from all kids competetive sport as well. She described the parent at the game that wrecks the sport for everyone involved, bullies others into submission, and generally wrecks sport for all in attendance. I do not find this woman to be a “Good Hockey Mom”….and the furthest thing from a suitable and qualified candidate for VP of the United States of America.

Several things bother me and it has nothing to do with which ticket I, or anyone else, will be voting for. It is sad that there is so much misinformation within these comments. Not everything said or printed is truth. Bloggers and websites can post a lie and someone else will run with it and before long, many just assume it to be true, without doing any research of their own. It is especially disheartening that many are basing their decisions are ignorance (lack of factual information). As women, we should rise above the bitterness, do our own research to make the best possible decisions (facts not heresay), and communicate maturely. What really bothers me is this mantra that she should stay home. Seriously. It is the personal decision of any mom whether to work when there are kids at home. Some need to, that is understood. Some use it as a creative outlet. Some feel a need to make a difference. Each situation is different and individual to the mom and family. I find the irony that the Women’s Lib movement is advocating that a woman does not have the right to make THAT decision and that the populous should make it for her. It seems to be a very closeminded organization that only promotes specific agendas, not about “women” at all.

She has it all like we women strive for and now women want to say she can’t do it. BULL! YES SHE CAN! Without Hillary I am going with McCain/Palin 100% and it was she that pulled me in and made me happy to vote for that ticket. It will be a first GOP vote for me. I will never vote for that evil Obama - NEVER.

Look, we all know moms can do anything but we just can’t do it all at once. With several nannies, maybe she can do this. Is that how she wants to be a mom? That is up to her. I just know that her party is selling her one way and if she is the VP she can’t be “that” type of mom. Saying that she can still bake cookies, get up with her special needs son at night, be a grandma, etc and do it all while meeting with diplomats and helping to run our country EFFECTIVELY…I just don’t think so. Come on moms, you know this is true. Could you do it?
