'Vogue' Sparks Controversy

How do you sell a $10,000 designer bag to the masses? Easy. Use some of the world's most impoverished, toothless faces to help make a product stand out. Dangling a carrot? Nah...

vogue_fendi_bib.jpg

An impoverished family of three hops on a motorbike for their daily commute, the mom without a helmet and is dressed in her traditional garb--except she's got a $10,000 Hermes bag displayed on her wrist. A young child from a poor family, being held by his toothless mom, models a $100 bib, while a man in a hut holds a $200 umbrella. Considering the fact that most Indians live on less than $1.25 a day, the recent 16-page Indian Vogue spread is causing quite an uprising around the world. Besides the fact that it's one of the most in-your-face juxtapositions between the poor and the wealthy, it's exploiting people who will probably never make the worth of some of these items in their lifetime.

You know that children are growing up when they start asking questions that have answers.

Coming home from very lonely places, all of us go a little mad: whether from great personal success, or just an all-night drive, we are the sole survivors of a world no one else has ever seen.
