Dog bites send nearly 368,000 victims to hospital emergency departments per year -- that's 1,008 bites a day. The majority of dog bites suffered by adults are to the lower extremities, then followed by bites to the head, face and neck. For children, 77% of dog bite injuries are to facial areas.
Yesterday in Part One of "When Your Pet Attacks," we met Eric and Mandy Pankowski and their one-year-old son Julian. The Pankowskis love their dog Gordie. But recently, Gordie snapped and attacked their nanny, sending her to the emergency room for stitches in six places in and outside of her mouth. After the vicious attack, the Pankowskis wondered if Gordie could ever be trusted again, especially around a baby. Desperate to keep his dog and get some help, Eric Pankowski contacted Tamar Geller, expert dog coach.
Today, we'll meet Tamar and watch her help Eric and Mandy on ways to coach and train Gordie. She's got some valuable lessons. But are they enough to change Gordie's fate and keep him in their home?
Stay tuned for Part Three when we find out Gordie's fate. And, check in tomorrow to see Tamar's tips on bringing a dog into a home with children.
