Seven-Year-Old Dies in Drop-Off Lane

Now her mom and dad want to send out a warning to other parents.

Chasta Gray

On the way to school yesterday, seven-year-old Chasta Gray was opening a bottle of water in the backseat of her parents' car. But instead of using her hand, she used her teeth. The cap became lodged in her throat, and she tragically choked to death.

"Choking hazards are not limited to children under three, despite what toy packages say," Dr. Cara Natterson says. "It is critical for parents to teach their children not to put toys, buttons, caps, hair clips and other chokeables in their mouths. My general rule is that anything the size and shape of a grape is a potential choking hazard."

"Parents should definitely take CPR classes, which include a segment on Heimlich-style maneuvers for children," she continues. "I advise them before the birth of a new baby, with refresher courses every few years. Teachers and day care providers need the same training."

My heart goes out to that mom :( I am always telling my 11yr old to stop stuff like that. Sadly, once kids get a little older they think that stuff like that won’t hurt them.

You wil be in my prayers.

gosh I am always telling my kids not to put things in their mouths and this just confirms why. how horrible. I have seen my son do this about 100 times. My heart goes out to the family

Why was she taking a bottle of water to school with her?
We have turned into a society that cannot go anywhere without a beverage in our hands. Walk through any mall and on every stroller cup holder is a coffee or soda. Remember the days when you could NOT eat or drink in the stores? Yes and there were actually signs telling you not to.

I am so sorry to hear about this. I really need to watch what I teach my kids. I use my teeth to open bottles all the time. As for taking the bottles of water to school that is a big plus our children get to have. It has gotten hotter and seems that the heat lasts longer in the year. In many school they tell parents to send their kids to school with water as most schools do not have AC. I volunteer in the class room and it gets so hot with all those kids they need the water.

What’s the drop off lane?

SHMom October 2, 2008, 6:19 PM

The drop off lane is our car rider lane. This is just a tragic accident and our hearts go out to this family for the loss of a beautiful little girl.

Anon, she probably had a bottle of water because kids don’t even have enough time to go to a drinking fountain between classes and have insane restrictions on going to use the restroom.

FIRST OF ALL, I AM SO SORRY FOR THIS FAMILES LOSS, A TRAGIC LOSS OF A CHILD IS SO HEARTBREAKING. MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH ALL OF YOU. MAY YOUR DAUGHTER REST IN PEACE. NOW I AM SORRY BUT I NEED TO ADD THIS TO THE PERSON WHO WAS QUOTED ABOVE::

I AM GLAD YOU ARE ANONYMOUS, I UNDERSTAND YOU “NEEDED TO MAKE YOUR POINT”—BUT HAVE A LITTLE UNDERSTANDING OR SYMPATHY TO THIS FAMILY, AND SHOW IT. THEY JUST LOST THEIR CHILD, YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED FOR SCOLDING THESE PARENTS ABOUT DRIKING BEVERAGES AND WHAT THE RULES ARE.

Poor kid. As for the parents, why didn’t they wake up to the call of death. And people should create water bottle openers(similar with the coke bottle opener, only its used in plastic bottles). NEXT TIME, PLEASE BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR KIDS NO MATTER HOW OLD THEY ARE. BE FRIENDLY AND THEY’LL FOLLOW YOUR COMMANDS

First of all…my heart goes out to this family. What a tragic loss of such a precious little girl. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. I am also putting you on our prayer chain.
Next…OMG..I CAN’T BELIEVE WHAT ANON SAID. I AM A CHRISTIAN WOMAN WITH 4 CHILDREN OF MY OWN. BUT IF I KNEW WHO AND WHERE YOU WERE…….YOU WOULD GET A VISIT! Now days everyone has a bottle of water or soda with them. My kids take water to school every day.
PLEASE PEOPLE….IF YOUR GOING TO HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY…..COULD YOU HAVE SOME SYMPATHY FOR THIS FAMILY? IF NOT…MAYBE YOU SHOULD JUST NOT SAY ANYTHING AT ALL!!!!

my thoughts and prayers go out to the family,,,i have a 5 yr old daughter myself and she takes a bottle of water with her to school every day,,,the water in the school is not safe to consume so the board has requested that every child bring their own,,,,i’m also very sorry this family has to deal with some of these terrible comments..i’m sure those people would feel much different if it had been their own child….

I am a freind of the family of the child that was lost. It was a tragic accident and people should learn from this. Of course to those of you who did not know Chasta or her family should not judge. I have 2 kids myself and sometimes my kids eat and drink in the car when we are on the run. This could have happened to anyone. My prayers and thoughts are with the family and friends who had contact with sweet, Chasta. My kids and I will miss her greatly for she has touched our hearts and brought awareness to our eyes…

MAY GOD BLESS YOU CHASTA AND YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS WHO LOVE YOU…

WE WILL NEVER FORGET YOU!!!!

I can’t believe what anon had to say about the water bottle. It doesn’t always have to be a water bottle cap, it could have been anything. I have a six year old grand-daughter and she prefers to drink water over soda pop which is a lot healthier for her. She once choked on some meat, so then should we stop her from eating meat? You could at least show some respect for Chasta and her family. It was a tragic accident, not something her mother did or did not do. My heart goes out to this family. Try and be consoled knowing that Chasta is with God and is truly loved. My prayers are with you now and always.

I am glad someone said something about the rudeness of the thoughtless comments. God bless this family and little Chasta. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you. I have already been telling all of my Mom friends and Dad friends about this horrible tragedy so Chasta’s name can resonate on their ears and open their eyes to the hazzards of rushing through life.

Are you kidding me?! If only we could all be as perfect as you! What ridiculous comments to make and at such a COMPLETELY inappropriate time. A simple “Sorry for your loss” would suffice.

My heart goes out to Chasta’s family. I can’t imagine the heartbreak you are feeling right now. May God bring you comfort and strength.
