Denis Leary: "Your Kids Aren't Autistic - They're Just Stupid"

This isn't the only thing the actor/comedian said about autism in his new book. The "Rescue Me" star said the following in his new book, "Why We Suck: A Feel Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid":
| "There is a huge boom in autism right now because inattentive mothers and competitive dads want an explanation for why their dumbass kids can't compete academically, so they throw money into the happy laps of shrinks ... to get back diagnoses that help explain away the deficiencies of their junior morons. I don't give a @#$% what these crackerjack whack jobs tell you -- yer kid is NOT autistic. He's just stupid. Or lazy. Or both." Do you agree? |

I totally agree with Denis! I think autism exists but i think too many parents are quick to diagnose because they refuse to take responsibility for raising smart, intelligent kids. It’s easy to label someone - it’s hard to raise an involved, engaged child.
His momma didn’t teach him any manners and he is speaking on a topic he is clearly ignorant about.
Autism is real. Many well educated parents and involved parents have children with autism. And many children with autism are incredibly bright. There are some children who do not have autism that are being misdiagnosed, but that does not mean it doesn’t exist.
God forgive him and his lack of knowledge.
oh!!!how i would like to have that trash in my face to slap him really good.A*****E!!!my 11 years old is autistic, but he is a bright, intelligent boy.and for anyone that thinks that autism is not real i wish for you that in the future you got an autistic child of your own, then you gonna know is it real or not.THEY ARE TO MANY PEOPLE “IGNORANT” OUT THERE!!!
Well, as an autism reasearcher I know he is simply wrong. On the other hand, he does seem personally qualified to talk about being loud and (mentally) lazy… :)
I do believe that some kids are misdiagnosed or it is used as an excuse for SOME people. But I have a very good friend with an severely autistic child. We have just gotten to know them well as they just moved in next door. It is not just an excuse for them. I see every day the meltdowns and the triumphs they have. How dare Dennis Leary say that about something he obviously has no clue about.
He is right. I have two Autistic nephews. One who should be institutionalized and another who has a nebulous future ahead if he does not get some serious intervention. That being said, I don’t see how the current Autism rates are statistically supported. The number 1 in 150 (or whatever it is now) seems way too high.
WOW Do any of you know Dennis Leary? That is what he is “known” for-his rudeness and crudeness!
I just found it sad that ppl like that thinks it’s funny to say crap like this.
I think he said it for attention to get parents worked up.
My nephew has Asbergers Syndrome which is a form of autism. He is and always was the most intelligent child from the age of toddler up to the present age of 11 going on 12. Apparently, Denis Leary is a very ignorant individual. I’m sure that my nephew can spin wheels over him.
Please have Denis Leary contact me as I would love to tell him what a moron he is right to his face!
I have a seven year old son and we have been struggling with his Autism for over 3 years now. My whole family has been completely turned upside down due to this REAL brain disorder, and have read tons of information to help my child. Our local radio station was discussing this while we were on our way to school. I looked in my rear view mirror after the comments were read, and I saw the saddest look on my boy’s face. I’ve had to explainn so many times how hurtful people can be, and it breaks my heart. He knows he’s different, but he is intelligent. He has difficulty communicating his thoughts into words. We have enough trouble with comments by people at the grocery store, and I am tired of these types of stupid explanations from people with no clue. Thanks alot, “Dr. Leary”, you live in your lazy, ignorant world, and families like mine will live with the all to heart crushing real world and be even more strong having done so. I just don’t understand why all of a sudden it’s okay to hurt those with special needs. If it is a publicity stunt, it’s having to stoop pretty low to sell a book!
I have lost all respect for Mr. Leary. This is absolutely ridiculous. Please, work with a child with autism for a day, Mr. Leary, and see that it is real.
It’s so sad how people with talk about other diseases/disorders with respect, like cancer but will joke around and disrespect others, like autism. Ignorance is not only rampant in situations like these; so is discrimination.
Digusting.
I have always been a fan of Denis Leary. But having a brilliant autistic child, I cannot support him anymore. This is not only disrespectful for all the parents that work daily with their children, but also for the wonderful teachers and researchers that help these children recover from this terrible disorder. Shame on you Mr. Leary.
Nice info. Nice reading. I just have one observation to make about funny t-shirts.

I work as a special ed teacher with a lot of children that are autistic and I can tell you that they are very bright children who just don’t have the ability to work on their own. I think what he is saying is horrible and I hope that he never has to deal with anyone in his family that is less than perfect.
