Did Isiah Thomas Use His Own Child in a Cover-up?

Tuesday, October 28, 2008

When police responded to a 911 call from the home of former Knicks President Isiah Thomas, they found an unconscious 47-year-old man. But Isaiah says it was his daughter who needed medical attention - not him. What is going on?

Isiah Thomas

On Friday, police responded to a 911 call from the Purchase, N.Y. home of the former Knicks president and coach.

According to police, when they arrived at Thomas' house, they found an unconscious 47-year-old man who they took to White Plains Hospital. Police say no alcohol was involved, and are calling the incident an accidental overdose - not a suicide attempt. And although police refuse to identify the man as Thomas, several media outlets reported that police confirmed it was in fact Thomas who went to the hospital.

But here's the glitch: When reached on his cell phone Friday, Thomas told the New York Post he had not been treated for a sleeping pill overdose, and that it was his 17-year-old daughter Lauren who had a medical issue, not him.

It "wasn't an overdose," he told the newspaper. "My daughter is very down right now. None of us are OK."

Police say they are outraged by Thomas' story, and insist it was not his daughter who was taken by ambulance.

"The only thing I can say is maybe he has some stipulation in his contract," says Harrison Police Chief David Hall. "If he takes drugs or whatever they may not owe him the $18 million. I have no idea."

Thomas was fired as Knicks president and coach earlier this year after a brutal sexual harassment lawsuit brought by a former employee, but is working for the team in an undisclosed capacity. He is not listed in the team's media guide, but will continue to collect a reported $18 million over the next three years.

Hall says he's upset by Thomas' story because it makes his officers look incompetent and dishonest.

"'Oh, it was my daughter.' The cops aren't stupid," Hall said. "The crime is worse than the cover-up. We're still talking about this thing four days later. Tell the truth from the very beginning and this thing is over in 24 hours ... I've never said who the individual was at the house. We know that there was a 47-year-old male, not a 17-year-old female."

Thomas could not be reached for comment.

Jesse Derris, a Thomas family spokesman, said: "It's a personal family matter and the Thomas family continues to ask for everybody to respect their privacy."

Tell us - Would you ever use your kids to cover up your wrongdoings - even if millions were at stake?
