Disgusting Birth Announcements?!

Momlogic's Momstrosity: Downloading and emailing pictures has become the new birth announcement. Where do you draw the line when it comes to what pictures to send?

Baby
Back in the day, birth announcements were cards, sent though the mail  and often didn't even include an image of the new arrival -- just the name and stats written in a cute baby font. With today's hyper-speed technology, digital pictures of a newborn can be disseminated to friends and family in a split second. And new parents, armed with the ease of said technology, aren't being as selective as they might be of which pictures they choose upload to photo sharing websites.

One mom, I know recently received an announcement via email that shocked her, "The baby was covered in that mayonnaise stuff that covers newborns."

That substance, known as vernix caseosa, protects babies' skin from exposure to the amniotic fluid in the womb.  Usually it is washed away in baby's first bath, but some parents choose to leave it on as a natural moisturizer. That may be -- but does it make a good picture?

Do you think a snapshot of a baby -- fresh from the oven -- makes an appropriate birth announcement?

While I don’t consider it disgusting, it’s not really something I would put on my baby announcement. I’d rather wait until my baby is all clean, thanks.

My friend’s Facebook profile picture is of her baby’s but while she’s being cleaned off and all you see is the meconium on a wrinkled little but. I’ll take mayonnaise any day.

I guess those pics literally are the FIRST pics of baby. Not everyone needs or wants to see them. Keep them to yourself if you’ve got them.

It’s not “gross” but it’s not exactly flattering to the baby. I mean, if I would not send out a Christmas Card photo of myself just getting out of bed, no makeup, bed-head hair, with ‘chicken feed’ in the corner of my eyes, then WHY would I want my baby’s announcement to show my baby in as natural a state (as my getting out of bed!) but albeit an UNFLATTERING state! If I care about what I send to others with my own photo, then I should “care enough to send the very best” about my baby! A cuter picture is definitely in order!

Maybe not to friends but in my family they all wanted the “first”pics of baby. Actually some of my good friends got them too and when they had kids I wanted the “first” pics as well. There is nothing disgusting about birth or a newly born baby, this is what they look like fresh from God. I’m cool with it.

Just be thankful when you see the pics you receive from new parents. They have a healthy baby. They are having one of the most memorable times in their lives and they want to share it with everyone they know. Just be happy for them and don’t sweat it…geez there are to many other things to think about besides a natural photo of a newborn baby.

Aww I think it’s kinda cute. That’s what babies look like! I’d share it with my family and friends that I thought would appreciate it, but definitely not with everyone. And not as a formal “birth announcement” photo either.

People need to get a grip! Its a baby at its most natural state and there is nothing wrong with that! In fact if you see something wrong with it perhaps there is something wrong with you! Its a baby and the pics go to friends and family! I honestly don’t see anything wrong with pics from the first moments of life being shared among friends and family! As for posting on the internet where anyone can see that is different? There are people out there who are perverts whom might see something wrong with it becasue they are messed up in the head!Again its baby not some porn picture that most of you people whom are disgusted by it are making it out to be! I think its sweet that they left the vernix because that is how a baby looks after all! I’m expecting and maybe I’ll send baby announcements too like this to friends and family! My family aren’t pervs and wouldn’t see it as gross! Get over it people!

A poster on another public message board I read had posted a picture of her new baby. It had just popped out, and in the corner you could clearly see her HOO HOO! I was shocked!!!

Truly disgusting. There are some great sites online that combine the ease of technology with the sincerity of a mailed out announcement. Try Sugarhouse Ink for one.

I think it’s beautiful.
