Great Idea: Costume Swap

Momlogic's Julie: Here's how your mom friends can help you save money this Halloween.

child costume

A friend of mine, who is a bit strapped for cash these days (aren't we all?), sent out a mass email to her friends yesterday asking if anyone had a size 4T costume her son could wear this Halloween. I just happened to have two from Babystyle in that exact size, so I dropped them off to her yesterday.

I just love her ingenuity. Instead of spending money she doesn't have or charging a $50 costume that will only be worn once, she reached out to her friends for help. And what good were my eight-year-old son's size 4T costumes doing collecting dust in the dress-up drawer, anyway?

I am often embarrassed to ask others for help. But this email was a reminder that all of us moms should all help each other out when we can ... especially in this economy. After all, that's what friends are for.

I think that’s a great idea. It reminds me of when my younger SIL was in high school and went to all the dances. She and her friends would swap dresses so they didn’t have to buy new ones.

Brilliant. I have about 5 costumes from the past few years… great for dress up but not after they grow out of them.

I haven’t swapped because my youngest is the same size as all his friends. But this year I went into the costume box and took out 3 that no longer fit. I sold them on Craigslist for cheap, figured other moms could use them. and then I used that money to buy my son’s costume. Worked out perfectly.
