Trista's Second Pregnancy -- High Risk?

Wednesday, October 15, 2008

The Bachelorette is pregnant with her second child.

Yesterday, Trista Sutter announced she is pregnant with Baby #2. But in her first pregnancy, she suffered from pre-eclampsia and HELLP.

Pre-eclampsia is pregnancy-induced high blood pressure that causes severe swelling and/or a high concentration of protein in the urine. HELLP is a rare but serious illness in pregnancy. HELLP stands for Hemolysis, Elevated Liver enzyme levels and a Low Platelet count. These are problems that can occur in women with this syndrome. Women with HELLP syndrome may have bleeding problems, liver problems and blood pressure problems that can hurt both the mother and the baby. In rare cases, it can be fatal.

Will her second pregnancy be high-risk? Doctors say if you have HELLP syndrome during one pregnancy, you can have it again during your next pregnancy -- but the illness is usually less severe the second time. According to a study in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, pre-eclampsia reoccurs in 25% of women, and recurrence of HELLP syndrome is found in only 2.5% of women.

Here's hoping Trista has a happy and healthy pregnancy.
