A British couple is mourning the death of their newborn daughter after she contracted the herpes virus at only 10 days old. Charlotte Raveney, 32, and her husband lost baby Mira to the same virus that causes the common cold sore. They believe that Mira contracted the virus after her mother kissed her with a cold sore. "As it was my first-ever cold sore, her tiny body was unprotected," Raveney said. The infant became ill four days after being released from the hospital.

this is misleading. something like half of adults by age 25 have the virus HPV1, usually contracted by being kissed by an adult who has a visible cold sore when you were a baby or child. however, you can have the virus and not know it. you could have gotten one sore even inside your mouth as a child and not remember it or have seen it. you can also ‘shed’ the virus i.e. be contagious, even if there is no sore visible. by age 40, 90%+ of adults have HPV1. most of those have had a cold sore at some point in their lives, however, many of them have not. bottom line - it’s important to not let Anyone kiss your newborn baby who has a visible cold sore on their face/mouth/nose.

Sad but true, I lost a baby cousin, he too was just a few days old, due to another relative kissing him when they had a cold sore. I will be very protective with the baby growing inside me now, when he is born I will not let anyone kiss kiss until he is older.

As the facilitator for a support group for people with hsv and/or hpv, I can attest to the fact that a diagnosis devastates people. I would have thought the people’s anxiety was only about how it affects their sex life, but I’ve learned that people are also (with good reason) very worried about passing it on to their children.

Regarding CC’s comments - You seem to be confusing HSV (herpes simplex virus) with HPV (human papillomavirus). This article is talking about HSV1. You can read more on websites like webmd.com or www.sensovi.com/share(mine). Hopefully this story, although tragic, will help to educate people about HSV.

I am so sorry to hear this. My thoughts and prayers go to all involved.
