Raising the Obamas
It takes a village to raise their two daughters.
When self-proclaimed Hockey Mom Sarah Palin leaped onto the national stage with her five kids in tow, she stole the show with the mom voters. Suddenly, no one remembered Barack's onstage banter with his little girls at the Democratic Convention or Michelle's stories of juggling work and family. The only mom that mattered in this election was the one from Alaska. This week, the Obamas are wrestling their way back into the mama limelight.
In an attempt to paint the Obamas as the ordinary family next door, Michelle's friends and neighbors spoke with the Associated Press about how the Obamas are raising their kids while running a national campaign. Michelle's mom plays "air traffic controller" for a cohort of friends who swoop in and take the girls to school and piano lessons, handle sleepovers and braid their hair.
Michelle Obama's longtime friend Yvonne Davila described the First Lady hopeful as "you and I, she's the woman next door, she's the woman down the street."
This election is all about being the regular Joe Six Pack with regular problems -- who can forget Sarah at the Vice Presidential debate talking about how to pay for college or Joe Biden getting choked up when he talked about being a single dad. The latest move from the Obama camp seems to be to remind voters that Sarah Palin isn't the only working parent in this race.
