Violent Bullying Plagues Pennsylvania Schools

A series of violent attacks has erupted on the students of Hazleton Area School District in Pennsylvania last week -- and school officials are coming together to try and prevent further incidents. School director Robert Childs said recent incidents of bullying have the victims finding other means of education. In one incident, a girl was being attacked by another female. "She was slamming the kid's head against the sidewalk," Childs said. "Now, the girl's talking about going back to the Dominican Republic. She's saying it's safer there than going to school in the Hazleton Area School District. I saw her in a follow-up (visit) in the emergency room. She was pretty thoroughly pounded." Beginning next week, there will be a series of meetings with groups of middle and high school students to confront the problem by discussing various issues that the students may be facing. "There are avenues in place for both the perpetrator or victim for them to work those feelings out before they take it out on another student," said Principal Francis Antonelli.
