Grandma, the Wreck

Guest blogger The Mediocre Mama: She was doing me a favor -- watching my kids while I went away on business. So should I ignore the fact that she wrecked my car and cost me over a thousand dollars?
When I left for my business trip, I knew my kids were in good hands. She's not only a competent grandmother, but my kids love her games and energy. I felt relieved she would be the one caring for them while I couldn't.
Once, while I was gone, they hit the drive-thru -- literally. As in the side of my car and the posts to protect the people in the little glass window met. Not knowing what to do, she backed up and continued to scratch the entire side of the car.
The body shop guy informed me the damage is almost $2000 -- with a $1000 deductible. Those are some expensive nuggets! Add the rental we would need that fits three car seats, and we're talking several hundred more. Neither she or I are in a place to spend this kind of money and I'm afraid this fender bender could be the start of a family squabble.
What should I do?

I would let it go. She cared for your 3 children while you were gone. The relationship between all of you is worth more than $1000. Instead of buying gifts for adults this Christmas, perhaps you both could set that cash aside until you have saved the $1000.
