WESH.com: A 4-year-old boy was attacked by a dog at a Deltona day care on Tuesday.
The dog involved in the attack was an 80-pound, 7-year-old black Labrador retriever mix named Bear.
Bear is being held at the Halifax Humane Society pending the outcome of the investigation into the attack. If he is deemed a dangerous dog, the owner will be given a choice to euthanize the dog or keep it. If she chooses to keep him, Deltona city law will require she either put a $50,000 bond on the animal or take it outside of the city limits.
The attack occurred at Ms. Sherry's Day Care, a home day care owned by Sherry Webster and operated out of her home. Webster has two dogs at her home, including the lab mix.
A visibly shaken Webster said the incident was a terrible accident. She was crying and had blood on her shirt. She refused to offer a specific explanation for how the dog got a hold of the boy, identified by his uncle as Landon Sage. She simply said it happened as the children were coming back inside the house for a drink.
"It was just a freak accident. That's all it was. The dog is gone. It was just a freak accident," Webster said.
The boy was airlifted to Halifax Medical Center and needed stitches for bites on his head and chest.
"He's doing good. It was non-life threatening. He's going to get some stitches," uncle Mark Toney said.
Toney sends his son to the same day care.
"This is just a freak accident. My son is still going to come here. I'm not afraid," he said.
A neighbor who has been sending her children to Webster's day care for years also said she thinks the incident was a freak accident and that she will continue to send her children there.
Webster said she wants Landon's family to know she loves him like he's her own and that she's very sorry for what happened.
The Department of Children and Families said the day care is not listed in it's computer files and may not be licensed by the state. A DCF spokesperson said the agency will visit the home Wednesday morning to investigate.
The sheriff's office said no charges will be filed in the case. DCF said day care owners are allowed to have animals on site as long as parents are notified.
