Calls for Baby Formula Recall

Wide spread panic and confusion rippled across the country yesterday after reports that traces of malamine were found in major brands of infant baby formula. Melamine is an industrial chemical recently found in Chinese infant formula that killed three babies and sickened at least 50,000 in China.

A national consumer's group was demanding the Food and Drug Administration recall the formula, but the federal agency said they released inaccurate information about the level of chemicals found in popular baby formula products.

The FDA says the baby formula is safe and parents can continue feeding it to their children, arguing that the low levels of melamine contamination do not pose a health risk.

The FDA said they would only recall the products "based on scientific evidence" and said there is no reason for such action.

Below are the revised findings released by the FDA of the three major baby formula firms that manufacture more than 90 percent of infant formula products in the United States.

• Nestle's Good Start Supreme Infant Formula with Iron had two positive tests for melamine on one sample, with readings of 0.137 and 0.14 parts per million.

• Mead Johnson's Infant Formula Powder, Enfamil LIPIL with Iron had three positive tests for cyanuric acid, at an average of 0.247 parts per million.

Separately, a third major formula maker -- Abbott Laboratories, whose brands include Similac -- told AP that in-house tests had detected trace levels of melamine in its infant formula. Those levels were below what FDA found in the other formulas, an Abbott spokesman said, and below any nation's safety guidelines.

I don’t think anyone wants even low levels of melamine in their baby’s formula… I know they are not recalling it, but… ick…

I suspect there are trace amounts of lots of different substances not only in milk formula, but everything that is manufactured. If I have the numbers right, the amount of melamine found in the Chinese milk formula is about 17,000 times as much as these samples.

I understand the feeling of wanting zero tolerance for foreign substances in our food (especially our baby food), but you can simply switch brands if the trace amount bothers you.

But how far does it go? No tap water? OK. Wearing breathing masks 24/7 (that air ain’t 100% pure either)?

What do we really know about trace contaminants in any of the stuff we ingest? The FDA allows a certain percent of rat feces and all kinds of stuff in manufactured food products. Pesticides and fertilizers affect produce. Look some of that stuff up and .14 parts per million starts to sound pretty pure. Hell, for all we know that those levels it may be good for you.

Just a partial list of day in the chemical life of an infant.

Do the math! — as moms and dads and grandparents are assured one thing at a time — as though these do not add up, accumulate, interact and risk baby.

A little mercury in infant vaccinations for hep B won’t hurt baby
A little formaldehyde in flame retardant pajamas, mattress and rocking chair won’t hurt baby
A little melamine in formula won’t hurt baby
Fluoride and chlorine in water used to mix the formula won’t hurt baby
A little Bisphenol-A and Pthalates leeching in nipple and plastic baby bottle at each feeding won’t hurt baby
Synthetic fragrance in disposable diapers won’t hurt baby
Dioxins and Sodium polyacrylate to absorb urine in disposable diaper won’t hurt baby
Small amounts of latex and more Bisphenyl-A, Pthalates and artificial coloring from pacifier won’t hurt baby
Small amounts of Lauryl sulfate in shampoo won’t hurt baby
Formaldehyde in nursery cribs, changing tables and dresers won’t hurt baby
Newly painted nursery gassing VOC’s won’t hurt baby
…..etc, etc. etc.
Traces of pesticide in baby food won’t hurt baby.

There is no end to the list and no logic either.
